Hi everyone,

Been ttc #2 for over 10 months with no success and have been lucky enough to get GP to do bloods for me which appear to be fine. Dh did a home sperm test (wanted some ideas but we are going to get it done properly as we appreciate they are not that reliable) - it came back with a poor result.

so - question is - what are the best supplements/quantities of vits/minerals to give him to improve his swimmers and our chances?

also, anyone got any positive stories that this might work???

thanks

Hey,

My DH had this problem. It was down to drinking a bit to much (binge drinking no serious alcohol problem). It was also down to stress at his work.

2 years after ttc, im 25 weeks in to 1st pregnancy.

Good luck to you.

ps.. we kinda let it take over our lives at the time, hard not to i know but just something else to keep in mind.

xx

I was told by the consultant at the assisted pregnancy unit near us to get dh to start taking WellMan supplements (available at Boots and all good chemists ) as it had just about everything to boost the swimmers. Also make sure he's wearing boxers, no tight undies... he doesn't ride a bike a lot does he? My dh does and it affected his swimmers, he had to get a fancy saddle. Also your dh doesn't work in a hot environment does he, or sit down alot all day? All that can damage sperm production, they need to let the air get to their bollocks, over heated testicles = poor sperm count.

Oh and of course the obvious, don't smoke, drink moderately and eat healthily.

Dh had poor sperm results - very. Here's what he was told:

Cut out alcohol completely

No smoking

Lots of exercise

Zinc and omega oil supplements

He did all this and we now have a ds, conceived naturally, when we were told we had no chance at all.

Were the results low count or quality?

twoturtledovesplease · 28/12/2008 20:10

thanks for the quick responses. going to stock up on wellman and zinc tablets!!

dh barely drinks so i know its not that - we do run our own business so stress could well be a factor considering current climate!!

headfairy - its weird about the bike thing - i read that somewhere else. He does cycle to work which is something he didn't do when we conceived dd (won't be for a while now though!!)

ib - as it was a home test, its just a count type reading. glad it worked for you - congrats

Your dh can still cycle, it's good exercise and you know how much store the docs set by good exercise but invest in a wide padded seat rather than a thinner one, and when he's cycling he should stand up out of the seat every now and then. It's only really a problem if your dh cycles for a couple of hours a day.

My DH has just had his results back too, which were also poor. It's been an emotional xmas with us both dealing with the news. I've heard that cutting down on caffine is important.

We have one DS and have been ttc for ages .

yellowflowers · 29/12/2008 09:12

I'd like to do this too and my dh has agreed to take whatever supplement I buy for him - but he can't swallow pills. Any in medicine form or chewable that you know of?

twoturtledoves,

Would not put too much store by these DIY test kits; they are not totally reliable and can cause worry.

Was wondering why you have not seemingly been referred as yet to a gynae unit. I would ask about this being done asap. Also a proper semen analysis (infact more than one should be done as one poor result is not fully indicative of there being male factor problems) should be done as a matter of course; its not just about count but motility and morphology (how the sperms are formed) as well.

Simple remedies like taking zinc etc won't do any harm but taking vitamins in themselves does not improve count. Chewable tablets can be easily purchased.

Thanks Attila,

I only went to the docs at the beginning of december so i guess its early days for a referral etc. My doctor only left a message on christmas eve saying blood tests were ok so am going to try to speak to her later for more info and to ask if we can get DH proper tests done especially as I have had another period since i saw her. To be honest, she really only did the tests as a favour as she was pretty insistent that 10 months isn't that long and i am 34 so 'not that old' as she put it!

I agree that the home tests are not to be trusted too much - we will try to get something more professional organised.

Sounds like we are in a similar place. We have been TTCing for 14 month, had two of what I guess were very early MCs (within 10 days of conception) and nothing. DH's semen analysis came back today with very poor morphology (1% normal forms) and borderline motility. Yet we eat quite healthily, he goes to the gym 5 days a week, has been taking zinc for a while and smokes perhaps 10 cigarettes a year (yes,a year, not a week).

Does anyone have any good suggestions to improve morphology and motility while we wait for the results of other investigations and referrals, please?

Dawni · 30/12/2008 18:02

hello ladies, sorry to butt into your thread, was just having a read as we're TTCing #2 .... My DH is taking Bulgarian Tribulis for his troops, this increases mobility and count we are on cycle 3 but nothing as yet !! We live in hope

Good luck to you all

D xx

No hot baths!

SuiGeneris, has he had a scan to check whether he has a varicocele?
