False + after trying for years!! ARGH!

thought I'd let you know about a false positive I've had recently. My husband and I have been ttc for 2 years, and recently had our first ever positive! I did 6 tests in total, and from those 6, I had 4 + and 2 -. I went to my Dr who then sent me on the same day for a blood test to confirm these + tests. The next day he called me to say that the HCG level in my blood was less than 1. Obviously we were devastated and infuriated at the maker of the tests! We'd bought our tests from Sainsburys, and I let them know as soon as we'd found out. I had done a clearblue test in the middle of the 6 from sainsbury's (which came back as -), but believed that the + tests may have just been more sensitive. I wanted to share this with you, as I had not heard of false positives before this.

we continue ttc....

I'm sorry to hear about this, it is so disappointing.

I had a false positive some years ago when ttc my DD, but because the positive line vanished after about 15 mins I sort of suspected something was up.

2 years is a long time to ttc. Is your doctor helping you get any tests/a referral to a specialist?

TBH it sounds like either it is a chemical preg or you are actually preg it just hasnt shown in your blood stream yet. im not 100% sure but it is nigh on impossible to get a false positive. either that or it is an evaporation line but for that to happen on 4 tests it is unlikely
maybe do another tet in a few days time to see if it comes back as another positive and use a different brand (not CB as they are very insensitive) and then report back
good luck

thanks guys, My gp has told me that HCG shows in your blood b4 your urine - so we know I'm not preg this time . I'm waiting to have a lap & Dye as I had an HSG (xray with fluid in cervix OUCH!) showed up I have 1 blocked tube. So surgery to unblock that.... yeah 2 years is ages, especially emotionally. I genuinley feel SO worthless with each period I get, and no matter how much I know I shouldn't feel that I can't help it. I think it's about time I gave my emotions a break for a few months... get xmas over and done with. I still have the pos tests btw - still strong! argh!

damn I'm ranting tonight! lol

just a little aside...when i got preg with my DD i had a blood test to confirm and it was negative! i kept testing positive and eventually got a pos blood test. sometimes the lab just dont do it properly or there is a problem with the sample etc. maybe still test again oin a few days to rest your mind as i would certainly be looking at the positive hpts and wondering... just a thought

You're allowed to rant. Ttc is incredibly wearing. Personally I am sick to death of it and would almost like to stop, but am not quite ready.

Maybe just try to forget about it all over christmas?

aw dont give up. it took 5 years to conceive my son, and it was done totally naturally just as i'd given up hope !!!

it was worth every day of waiting...

ttc2yrs · 11/12/2008 11:58

I'm going to wait and see if I come on my period in the next week or so. If not then I'll test again. Such an emotional rollercoaster! I've just volunteered to help out at age concern xmas lunch on xmas day! I'm doing my charitable bit this year
