Conception

When's the best time to get pregnant? Use our interactive ovulation calculator to work out when you're most fertile and most likely to conceive.

How early in your cycle would you get a reliable result from pregnancy test kits?

This might well be a stupid question, but am gonna ask anyway!
I'm not sure of my exact cycle lengths, having come off the pill a few months ago and had irregular cycles since, I guess (hope!) while my hormones settle down etc - I reckon I'm due on any time this week (day 27 yesterday, day 31 on Friday) so when would be a good time for me to think that I'm late enough to warrant doing a test? Are there some that predict earlier than others?
Thanks all x

Hi,

First response can test earlier but the % of correct BFPs is lower than if you wait til you are late or the day you should be due.

Also can work it from ovulation if you been tracking that, they say test 15 days after ovulation has shown up.

Hope that helps

Irregular cycles are often caused by hormonal imbalances. If your cycles have been consistenly irregular then a blood test should be done to see what your hormone levels are like. The GP should check both your thyroid levels and also for a condition called polycystic ovaries. If a blood test is done for PCO then your LH and FSH levels need to be compared.

The pill can mask symptoms of any underlying hormonal problem if its there; it has not caused this to arise. The pill also leaves your system very quickly after taking the last tablet.

With irregular cycles as well it is less likely that you are ovulating if at all. It is quite possible to have periods without ovulating.

I'd refrain from doing any pg tests and have a blood test done instead by the GP.

Its hard if you dont know when you are due, because when you first come off BD pill you can skip ovulation altogether. Generally, its possibile to get a result @ 9dpo, and results from 14 dpo are considered accurate. The latest you should get a positive is @ 19dpo. Good luck!
