IVF and under 30 - what are my chances?

Hi there, im 27 years old - and have unexplained fertility - and i currently have the option of going for IVF- what are the statistics like for someone like me?

All my blood test came back really good.
My weight is 67kg and im 1.68m tall- so my BMI is fine.

Im just so nervous - and have been so depressed the last year because i havent concieved.
Any comments?

oh trying i feel for you i really do, i am currently having tests as i am not having periods, and have been trying for a year. i dont know your chances but wanted to bump for you x

I would say fairly good (in my non medical opinion). I have been through 2 cycles of IVF in my early 30s and was successful on my second. If you know where you are going to have the treatment the clinic should have statistics to show their success rates. They may well have a website which would give you this info. Wishing you lots of luck. Keep spoiling yourself with things like pedicures / manicures / massages etc. I also followed a course of acupuncture (she told me she thought I was pregnant 4 days before my blood test!).

hi guys,

My friend conceived and is due in 3 weeks after her 1st round of IVF after trying for 4 years, and 3 attempts of IUI, so I think IVF is pretty good these days!

I'm in a similar situation- no periods since stopping POP 2 years ago- I've been through the blood tests, clomid, lap and dye, now just about to start injections. I'm a bit scared

needamiracle- Congratulations to you!!!! Do you mind me asking what were the injections like? I had horrible side effects from clomid!!

I do feel for you.

Unexplained infertility is actually no diagnosis at all - this term means that they have failed to find out what is wrong.

Why has IVF been suggested now?.

I would ask what tests have been done to date on both of you and whether you have sought a second opinion?. Not saying that IVF is not the way forward but do you feel you have both been adequately investigated?.

Your age is in your favour but success rates overall are not high.

when i was 26 I got pregnant on my 2nd IVF attempt and had DS1 When i was 28 I got pregnant again on my 2nd IVF attempt and had DD

It does come down to individual clinics and staff skills.

Sorry you are in the "boat" of unexplained infertility, such a horrid term

I had IVF, due to Ovarian cancer and was TTC for 9 yrs, the same age as you are now. I had IVF in 2006 and it resulted in my DD1. I am now about to undergo my second round in 2 weeks.

IVF success can depend on a number of things, such as sperm and egg quality, your ability to hold onto the embryo and any genetic issues. IVF is getting better, but like I said, the biggest reason for failure is due to low quality and an inability for the embie to implant.

If your eggs and your partners sperm are good, but nothing seems to be working, you could try things like acupuncture and reflexology, if not already tried. I know a lot of people have had natural success by attending Zita West. I also know a lot of women have had success with a natural conception whilst going through IVF.

Diet can have a lot of impact on fertiflity success.

I had ivf because of severe endemetroisis when I was 27 and 29 - I have 3 children (yes 3!)as a result of those 2 attempts and they did seem to think my age and bmi helped.

hello.

Have no experience of IVF, but was struck by what you said re that you have been trying for a year? and already they've diagnosed you with unexplained infertility?

Tbh if you've only been trying for a year then a snap diagnosis like this and offers of IVF would concern me somewhat.

The average time taken to conceive is usually about a year (obviously taking into account those who conceive quickly and those who take longer), but generally they will only do tests etc once you've been ttc for over a year.

Can I ask where abouts in the country you are? I ask only because my sil has also just been told she has to have IVF and they've been ttc for just 15 months, so it's slightly concerning that professionals seem to be offering IVF before offering any alternatives?

and making diagnosis of "unexplained infertility" after only a year of ttc - I know this may not be what you want to hear, but if you've only been trying for a year I would be inclined to give it longer, especially if your tests have come back ok.

Ttc is an immensely stressful time (took 13 months to conceive my ds, and 3.5 years of ttc for a second with no outcome), but IVF is a very draining process, both emotionally and potentially financially depending on where in the country you live and whether your health authority will fund treatment. And the success rates are not high (generally between about 20/35% depending on where you receive treatment), so if you can avoid it I would.

just to add, obviously for those who have had no other choice but to resort to IVF I think that it is a wonderful advance. (personally it wasn't for me but I thinnk that for others it has meant having children that otherwise would never have been conceived).

But even those who have had no choice but to undergo IVF would IMO have chosen to conceive naturally rather than have to go through the process.

Which is why I am saying that if you've only been ttc for a year then it's really not that long in the grand scheme of things and I would really consider giving it more time. Even as long as another year, to see if it happens naturally.

hi all....both me and my husband have been tryin to conceive for the past five years after two we were sent for tests, my laparoscopy showed both tubes were blocked, so we decided to go for the op to try and unblock them, which worked but still they were very damaged...we tried six months of clomid before being told ivf was the next step forward...we have just finished our first course and now have to wait two weeks till we can do a test!!:^ it's not an easy thing to go through and the side effects from the injections were much worse than from clomid(and i had bad ones from clomid)but the results have been promising so far, i responded well to treatment with good folicles and on egg recovery they got 17 which was good as i was donating half of them so i got eight and the other lady got nine...five of mine fertilised and wen we went back for embrio transfer all five had seperated and were good to use...only two went back in though!!! the worst part is the next two weeks!!! wishing everyone the best of luck xxx baby dust all round!!

Hi everyone!!

I'm 27 and am now on my last month of clomid. Have another hospital appt in Feb and am hoping they refer me for IVF.
Have been trying for 2 and a half years. Had laporoscopy and blood tests. They found out i wasnt ovulating properly thats why they put me on clomid. The clomid has made me ovulate but no BFP so far
DP's swimmers are fine too. So think I will be put in the ' unexplained fertility ' band aswell!! My BMI is fine and have recently started trying acupuncture!! I'll try anything ha ha!!

catcarvell please let me know how you get on , i will be keeping my fingers crossed for you!!

hello

I was 25 when i started IVF, am now 31 with 3 beautiful girls thanks to IVF, 2 of whom are twins!! good luck - its hard but so sos so worth it xx

I think the conception rates from sexual intercourse are about 55% - 45%, and each clinic has it's own rates of IVF averaging about 15% - 30% depending on circumstances and the populationthey serve, type of clients they take etc etc.

If you ahve been trying a year its a long stressfull road for you but look at it another way - your body has only had 12 chances!! [or thereabouts]

What are the chances of ivf working with normal bmi. And age 30 partners sleek count is fine. Am I entitled to it for free on the NHS?

Depends on your ccg. All info is available on the fertility fairness website.

There is an ivf success calculator that will calculate your statistics given some specific info about you. Google it.
