Help, am I going to have a pessary on day of egg collection?!

I'm donating eggs, was reading a diary on fertility friends website. Lady there is donating eggs as part of egg share whilst also having IVF herself. Got to bit about her egg collection day and she had two pessaries to stick up her bottom before the procedure, one antibiotic and one for something else, anti-inflammatory I think.
No-one has mentioned this before
Anyone got any experience?

I didn't.
Only pessaries I know about are after you have embryos put back in, pregesterone hormones I think.

Oh thank god, Thanx. Was starting to get worried-I know the egg collection procedure will prob be a whole lot worse but I always worry about the silly things

Yes - I had an antibiotic pessary.

is it really horrible to do?

Depends - they usually do it at the end. What sedation are you having?

muffins · 13/10/2008 16:11

well the clinic we're with usually do the collection under GA but I wasn't happy about that so I said I just want sedation but I don't know what. Why can't they just give the antibiotic IV? So they put the pessary up your bum whilst you were sedated? I don't know if that makes me feel better or not

Well, technically I was sedated, yes. Have you done this before?

muffins · 13/10/2008 16:16

Nope still downregging, scan on Thurs then hopefully starting Gonal F same day. It's been ok so far, apart from a killer headache Saturday and slight grumpiness. I don't know how women go through this so many times but the end result is worth it I guess!

Good luck!

Hi Muffins,
I didn't have a pessary before collection. I was sedated, and don't know anything about what happened during the procedure itself - but presumably I'd know about it if I'd had something up my bum!
Hope I can be reassuring when I say it really was not a painful procedure at all. (And the best thing I've ever done...) The worst part was the 24 hours of weird weepiness and grumpiness that I had when I was sniffing. After the collection itself I just felt very tired and slept a lot for about 24 hours.
Good luck - and hope it goes well!

Hi Madcows, ur up early!
Thanks for ur reply, I think I've decided I'm just going to say 'thanks but no thanks' for anything up the bum I'm pretty sure the prophylactic antibiotics can be given IV...
Don't know if you got my reply on previous post I read ur diary on fertility friends, congrats to u and ur sister!
I've got a scan tomorrow and starting stims tomorrow hopefully so it's all happening now. The downregging stage seems to go on forever!
Now I've (mostly) stopped worrying about pessaries I can start worrying that I'm going to get OHSS...watch this space!
