Anyone's DH/DP had undescended testes at birth and problems/no problems with fertility??

Hi there,

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with potential problems or no problems with this.

My DH had undescended testes at birth and had the corrective operation at 8 years old. I've read on the internet that having the operation this late can cause problems with fertility. We are currently TTC number 1. We've only been trying for 3 months, however I read on another thread that undescended testes can cause problems and it set off alarm bells in my head.

I would be very grateful for any advice, or if you could share your experiences with this.

Hi Pruners,

Thanks for sharing your story. It's reassuring that you guys have a DC! At least if it's not good news, we may have IVF options.

My DH is going to call the docs on Monday to get an appointment to discuss this and hopefully get referred for tests. I also read about the increased testicular cancer risk...so I will make sure DH mentions this as well at the GP appointment.

my dh has not had this, but my ds (who is only 7 to be fair, and as far as i know not yet ttc!!! ) had bi lateral undecended testes, and has had two ops to correct his bits....

i'm wondering about his future, and will be watching with interest.

my friend had his op at anbout 10 he thinks and is now proud daddy to 3 boys, all conceied within a few months of trying.

Oooh, great news about your friend who had the op at 10!! I'm sorry about your DS, but I think they know loads more about it nowadays and if the operations were done early, there can often be no side effects!

DH has a GP appointment tonight...so will let you know...

My DH had an op aged about 8 to retrieve one testicle which was still undescended and we concieved our first DS on 2nd cycle trying and second DS on 4th cycle trying.

Thanks for sharing your story and congrats on your DSs! It's really encouraging and helpful to hear positive stories! My DH had both undescended...I think this can have more of a negative impact on fertility, but fingers crossed nothing too serious. I guess we will have to see what the GP says tonight.

Bloss - thanks. For your DS, was it one side only too? I'm curious if you were given any information or have to have further checks as he gets older...? Glad to hear all has been fine for your dad and DH!

Just wanted to post an update. Back from the GP...DH has to do a sperm test. So we got all the forms and pots and stuff. Although we want the results asap, you have to abstain from BDing for 48 hours. I suspect I'm going to OV any day now and we wanted to give this cycle a go. So we are going to wait til next week to do the sample. We should get the results back in a few days, so at least we'll know quickly!

It was weird because the GP didn't know anything at all really and we have to go back to get info on the increased risk of testicular cancer etc! She was on the internet getting info (just like me really!).

Anyhow, we're are just keeping our fingers crossed that it's a normal or on-the-low-side count...at least then there's hope. Some people who have this have no sperm at all apparently.

Thanks to everyone who posted! You have all given me hope! I'll posted again when we get the results.

My dp had one undecended-not sure when he had the op-think about 6-7. his brother had both undecended-we have one dd, now tring for dc2 and dp's brothers first baby is due any day now

I'm sure that the only problems will be if there were any complications with the op.

My DH had undescended testes at birth (not sure actually if it was just 1 or both). He was operated on age 2. He has low count and poor morphology and motility. We were told we would need ICSI to conceive and then went on to conceive 2 DSs naturally (10 months trying for DS1, only about 3/4 months for DS2!) Both DSs btw were born with testes in the right place!

Thanks so much for sharing your stories! It's really great to hear positive news and that even if there are some problems, there is still lots of hope.

I think we'll aim for getting the sample to the hospital next Tuesday, and fingers crossed for quick results back. I still haven't OV'ed this cycle and am on CD20. Last cycle I OV'ed on CD19, so I might just be in for a slightly longer cycle this month. It's really all we are waiting for as DH has to abstain from BDing for 48 hours prior to the smaple being taken.

Hi Everyone,

A quick update...DH did and delivered his sample this morning to the hospital. Frustratingly, he was told that the results will take weeks not days, which is what we were originally told!!! What they are doing with it for weeks, I don't know. It has to analysed within an hour...and most people can get the results the next day!

Oh well, the waiting game begins...2WW and results.

Hi guys,

Just got back from the GP. Had a really good doctor today, who went back through DH's notes and stuff. He told us that actually there shouldn't be any problems with regard to DH's undescended testes, as they were actually not up in the abdomen, but lower and the operation was just to bring them fully into the scotum. This means DH is not at increased risk of testicular cancer and also shouldn't (in theory) have issues with fertility.

So for anyone out there who is concerned about undescended testes...it's important to know where the testes were...completely undescended testes where they stay in the abdomen is a potential problem, but partially undescended is much less so!

However, the actual results of the sperm test were not so good. The sample volume was fine, motility is low (30% - a normal range is 50 - 100%) and the normal sperm count was 0%.

This is clearly bad, but the doctor said he thought that the result was very very strange, as he has never seen a 0% for normal sperm.

Basically we discussed what the next steps are and DH is to repeat the test in about 2 months. He has to change to cotton boxers. The Doc said to keep TTC and see what these results come back with. Next steps if the results are the same will be a referral. I think we will have some options, but it's a wait and see game now.

It hasn't really sunk in yet...but I feel some relief that I wasn't going mad and was right to think there was a problem.
