Hi all, me and my dp would love another baby. I have been told I have to wait 4 months for an appointment to have it removed. I am so upset as dont want to have this thing in me for 4 months, not only am I losing my hair, putting on weight and am a moody cow but now I am stuck with something in my body I cant get out

Can you get it out privately? I am in Nottingham and cant find anywhere else that will take it out, I am tempted to hack the thing out myself. I was so excited to be trying for a baby but now I cant till december.

Sorry to rant I am gutted x

Was it your GP who's told you the wait is this long? Have you tried the local FPC, from memory some will remove them and some say to go to your GP.
Also does your GP know about the side effects you're suffering because surely you shouldn't have to wait that long whilst suffering. for you

My gp doesnt remove them, it was the FPC that has the waiting list, no one else seems to touch them in the whole of Nottingham, Ive tried all the health clinics. If i had known it would be so difficult to take out I may not have had it put in

sorry. I know several people who have had them put in and out by their (different) GP's and I'm only across the border in Lincs. Have you tried phoning NHS direct and seeing if they can advise you of anywhere or try phoning BUPA and ask them as long as you are willing to pay.

Oh my god. I was going to have one put in but after reading your side effects I am thinking differently.

I know I am going off the thread topic but wondered how long you have had it in for and when you started to notice the side effects?

Hi Lauraloola I have had it in for a year maybe more, I had the side effects straight away, but the hair falling out came later, my mum noticed a bald patch and I am losing way too much hair when I brush my hair etc, I have put on about 9 lbs, but I used to be able to loose weight easily when dieting now I cant shift it and I always want to eat! I am a !bit! moody and my boobs hurt every so often in a month, but on the positive side I have had no periods whatsoever. The thing I am upset about is how I HAVE to have this thing in me when i dont want it, its like I dont have the right over my own body.

scorpio - I have tried every GUM and FPC in my area, no one will remove it for me. No wonder the waiting list is 4 months if there is only one place that takes them out.

Sounds awful. I was doubting having one anyway and you have made up mind! Back on the pill for me.

I hope you can get it removed quickly, I would defo look into paying if I was you xxx

thanks, I have made it sound bad but you might not get any side effects! and I loved the not bleeding part until my hair started falling out and my jeans wouldnt fit LOL

Supervixen have you tried a different doctors surgery? You could register with a surgery that has a GP that deals with implants?
I had mine in for nearly 18 months and it was awful! Bled constantly, was a bitch from hell, so glad i had mine removed.

can you register with 2 surgeries? I would hate to leave mine as they are so good, apart from not removing the implant!

speak to the nurse at your gp surgery, it is not a big deal to take it out at all. if the practice has a "minor surgery" list someone should be able to take it out, it literally just involves a bit of local anaesthetic a tiny cut and no stiches (usually).
the glasshouse street clinic has outreach clinics around nottingham (kimberly,clifton etc) could try their?

I will speak to a nurse but I doubt they will do it for me! I dont see what the big deal is either! I have tried all the clinics and they all say no we dont do it go to glasshouse st

Why not go to casualty saying that it is causing you pain - Maybe they would take it out for you? I would try anything if I was you.

Not sure about registering with two sugeries, sorry don't think you can.
You have to be qualified in the insertion and removal of the implanon i got told when i had it removed and inserted. Thats why there is probably a long wait. There is only 1 doctor at my surgery qualified to do it.
I hope you get it sorted soon.

A friend of mine registered at my surgery for the FPC and at her own fo general medical stuff.
She knew mine did implants and hers didn't, phoned for a chat with the nurse about it and it was no problem.

So... Are we all in agreement that gp's are not happy taking them out?

My niece has one, and is wanting it out due to unwanted side effects. Gp has told her wait 2 more months. Very unfair imo, her body and all that.

She is also in Lincs.

the other reason for waiting is that often the symptoms will settle (within 6 months), so GP's will try to defer. the gp's/fpc stance is the their is a cost to put it in terms of 2-3 appointments, the cost of the item: £81 and the fact that NICE is pushing it.
supervixen, u stated want to get pregnant so that actually trumps the side effect issue. i dont think you should have to pay to have this thing removed, but you could phone one of the notitngham gynaecologists secretaries (city or queens) and ask for a private appointment, they may ask for a GP letter. on nhs not sure how long the w/l for a routine gyane apt is in nottingham.

I went to my GP to have mine taken out as she put it in, and when I got there she said she dont take them out and have to go to FPC.

So went there and found out they have no doctors in unless you have an appointment (WTF?)

So have to wait 6 weeks for appointment for something I have no control over being in my body(gets knife and yanks pulls implant out)

I have side effects with my implant, had horrendous bleeding, hair falling out in big clumps, put on around a stone since having it in, and real bad mood swings!
Wish I never had it put in now!

I feel for you, at least your wait is weeks rather than months! I am going to try to get it out when I visit my mum in another part of the country - ridiculous...

It's just stupid, we pay our tax and national insurance for having things done and the nhs cant even have staff at any family planning clinics for these things. It makes it even worse that GP's cant be bothered to remove them.

If people have to be trained to remove them then they should train more people. It seems to me there are plenty who will shove them in, therefore they should also be able to take them out. I am still pissed off
