Hi,

Can anyone tell me can a GP prescribe Metformin for PCOS or does it have to be the hospital specialist? I say this because I know I have PCOS I was diagnosed a while back and I still have all the symptoms but I don't want to go to all the hassle of going back to the hospital for yet more tests to tell me I still have the same thing. So I was wondering if I could go to my GP being proactive and ask her to give me Metformin.

Hi heartmoonshadow

I was prescribed metfomin by my GP. But I had to prove to her I was trying to help myself first (exercise etc). I have been taking it since last october and I have lost 1.5 stone. But I have another 2 stone to go yet. Hopefully the exercise and low GI DIET will get me there soon

HTH

I conceived just from taking this and also keeping carbs to a minimum. Had PCO since, well, forever.

Hi

I was prescribed Metformin without any trouble at all from my GP. I'm only taking 500mg slow release a day and already my periods are regular again. I'm TTC at the moment and will bump up the dosage to 1000mg if need be.

I never see the same GP twice and some seem to be clued up and others not. You have a right to treatment and if your GP won't prescribe it then try another. Oh and if you do get the met, make sure you take it straight after a meal! I learnt that from bitter experience.

Just wondering did you need to have a fasting blood sugar test in order to get a script for metformin from your GP?

Four years ago (in Oz) I did, and that stuff worked wonders! Lost a stack of weight, periods evened out etc. Then got knocked up! Hooray!

Anyway weight is creeping back up, periods are mental again and I would like to get pregnant maybe sometime next year.

Off to the GPs tomorrow hoping to get a prescription for metformin again.

I have PCOS, I'm pretty certain of this as I have a type of epilepsy that makes it very likely, also my mum and sister have it along with type 2 diabetes. I'm wanting to literally walk into my GP and say... I want Metformin. I am slim so I'm hoping they won't say no based on that. I am not taking twice as much contraceptive for PCOS which I would have to because of the epilepsy medication. Can my gp prescribe metformin without a specialist?x
