I’ve had very painful periods since they first started. When I was younger, the only help I was offered by the GP was going on the pill, which I stayed on for over 10 years.

I came off the pill last September as we wanted to start TTC and haven’t been successful yet although first few months not properly trying and really started tracking LH etc for last 6 months.
I spoke to the GP and had fertility blood tests, which have come back fine so far. We’re currently waiting for my partner to have his semen analysis, and then hopefully the infertility referral can go ahead which will also explore the possiblity of endometriosis.
The pain hasn’t really improved since coming off the pill and it is hard to go through this pain every month which is impacting work/socials and with the only fix being the pill which obviously is no good when ttc.
I’d really like to hear from anyone who has also suffered with very painful periods and/or endometriosis and gone on to successfully get pregnant.

I had very painful and heavy periods from
day 1 when they started at the age of 12.

Was advised aged 24 by a wonderful female GP to get a mirena coil which I did and it transformed my life.

Had it removed in early 2018, got pregnant very quickly but ended in early miscarriage. Then conceived again around new years of 2018/2019 and my DC was born September 2019.

Ive recently had a scan and have signs of fibroids/ademyosis (I think that’s what it called).

So basically I’ve always had problems but successfully had DC

All the best with TTC. Try and relax as much as you can (although easier said then done) ❤️

Yes I conceived for the first time and only time I tried aged 40. I was in a long distance relationship so did not see my partner for several months at a time.

Had a healthy baby girl who was full term and no issues during pregnancy aside from low iron. Around time of conception I drank okra water ( chopped okra left in cold water in the fridge) as I had heard it helped conception and I honestly think it did help move things along.

I had about 5 small fibroids and had been on and off the pill since age 21. My periods have always been heavy with massive blood clots. I did not have any fertility tests. My GP refused any scans for my fibroids and said there was a backlog for scans due to covid and my only issue was my age. I had to ask where my fibroids were and was told towards my back. I researched this and worked out that they shouldnt stop me conceiving.

I took vitamin d with folic acid for 3 months before trying for my daughter. My diet is mainly chicken, fish and lots of veg. I do not eat dairy/gluten due to intolerances. Rarely drink alcohol say once a month have one drink.

After birth my periods came back 6 weeks later and have been heavy for the most part.. i thought they would calm down but only now 22 months post partum do they feel a bit better. I had some more scans but GP could not find evidence to support endometriosis in my lining but couldn't fully rule it out.

Personally I think looking at my diet, gentle exercise mainly yoga and cutting out a lot of sugar helped me. I eat quite good anyhow but these things in particular help to manage my period pain. A week before im due I mainly eat fish and lots of veg no alcohol. Hope that helps

Yes.

took a year though

Me too, very heavy painful periods from age 13. Had to suffer until age 17 when went on the pill. Stopped taking the pill after 10 years and took over a year to conceive. Went through some great anxiety at this time, but did have two children. The second one conceived at first attempt as periods improved a bit after childbirth and i hadn't been on the pill.. Got some painkillers from the GP which helped and never took the pill again Big plus menopause was a doddle not even a hot flush. Hang on in there i do think having taken the pill delays conceiving for some. My daughter was the same. Try not to get too anxious if you can, very best of luck

Yes - but will obviously depend on why there is pain - and no reason was found for me but suspect it was more likley to be fibroids.

Spent 20s not getting on with pill coming on and off and being told pain sometiem extreme and shear amount of blood was normal.

I got pg very quickly - longest was 6 months no miscarraiges though had heavy spotting in first but healthy babies - had them close together and bf and meant about 5 and half years of no periods and after that the pain was gone and they were much lighter till late 40s.

Labours were straight foward little to no pain relief and fast labours but did show how much pain was normal for me as thought active advanced labour was braxton hicks as my period pains constantly dismissed as low pain threshold were actually pretty extreme.

I think as you've been trying over 12 months and have heavy pain - you do need to push GP to consider what is going on a bit more with you.

I used to throw up with the pain from my periods. Had no problem conceiving.

Hoppinggreen · 05/10/2026 18:15

My periods were horriffic from day one (age 12), throwing up, passing out etc
The pill steadied them a bit but still weren't fun and when I came of it to TTC witin a month they were awful again. Luckily I got pg very quickly (three times)
I stayed on the pill wel into my 50's to make sure my periods had stopped as there was no way i was dealing with that again.

I’ve had heavy & very painful periods right from the first one! Was on the pill for 10 years and came off it to try for our first baby, now have 2 babies no real issues conceiving either so not impossible x

CortieTat · 05/10/2026 19:36

Yes, very painful since the beginning (was nearly 15) - vomiting and passing out. 3DC, got pregnant very easily, had my last little one at 47. No issues at all down there, I am very healthy and the reason for my painful periods was never found. They got better with age too.

ISaySteadyOn · 05/10/2026 19:47

Yes, I have painful periods still and 3 DC so it is possible.

StillWingingIt97 · 05/10/2026 21:15

Thanks all, its reassuring it can still happen even with painful periods. People close to me have conceived much quicker and none of them suffer with period pains like I do so just cant help but worry!

Yes, took me almost a year. Nowhere near the same pain with periods after having my baby.

Hang on in there. Lower stress and take good care.

My own advice is, if you’re really going for it, don’t worry too much about ovulation testing and just DTD every other day if you can, and every day for 5 days or so around the ovulation window. I didn’t find ovulation testing to be that reliable and think it was a bit of a distraction in the end from just DTD and giving my body every possible chance to get preg.

RealistScot · 05/10/2026 21:30

Yes always had painful periods, have had 3 pregnancies, one of them ended in a missed miscarriage at 10 weeks, 2 very healthy babies born. Now in perimenopause and been diagnosed with adeno and fibroids.

IHateAlzheimers · 05/10/2026 21:32

I did but my first baby took about a year to be conceived. I had Mirena coil after this all the way through until menopause and the next two babies were conceived much faster (obviously after swapping out my coils for a bit!). I would say after approx 10 years of horrific periods prior to my first child I had approx 5 more periods in total and did not miss them one bit. Although with hindsight I might have had a hysterectomy a lot sooner as well had I known how much better I'd feel without my uterus, so there's something to look forward to in the future Grin
