How likely is it to get pregnant from one instance of unprotected sex twice?

Hello! Embarrassed to be making this post but my dh and I made a stupid mistake 3 days ago. It was our first "date" since our dd was born nearly a year ago and we got a little too tipsy and, yeah, I'm sure you can guess what happened.

After checking my period app, I've now realised that it occurred the day before I probably ovulated. So even more idiotic of me to have not been keeping track of that. I'm now really worried that I'm going to find out I'm pregnant in two weeks. Our first dd was conceived in similar circumstances, one instance of unprotected sex and bam, pregnant. Clearly, we didn't learn our lesson.

We were going to start trying for baby #2 in ~6 months but getting pregnant right now would really get in the way of some big life plans that we have coming up. I know that no one can tell me but I'm panicking a bit. Surely the chances of one instance of unprotected sex resulting in a pregnancy twice are pretty low?? I'm grasping at straws here! Has anyone had something similar happen? And how did it turn out?

Of course you could be pregnant, you had unprotected sex. Speak to your GP to see if it's too late for the morning after pill.

Wallabyone · 03/10/2025 08:35

Are you still in the time frame for the morning after pill? If you got pregnant easily the first time, and you were at ovulation point this time, the chances are very high. I think the MAP only really works at a certain point in your cycle. Good luck x

Tillow4ever · 03/10/2025 08:35

It took one occasion of sex for all 3 of my sons AND my miscarriage pregnancy. Much to my husbands disappointment.

So yes, if it was right in your fertile window you could easily be pregnant. You should have taken the morning after pill if you didn’t want to risk it once you realised what happened.

muggart · 03/10/2025 08:36

I think if you did it the day before ovulation it’s like 20% or something like that (assuming no fertility issues). I have conceived 3 times that way, which is every time I have had unprotected sex on ovulation.

ScarlettSunset · 03/10/2025 08:37

Any instance of unprotected sex can result in pregnancy, particularly if it was near or during ovulation. The fact that it happened once before doesn't have any impact at all on the chances of it happening again.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 03/10/2025 08:37

I'd say the chances are pretty high, tbh.

It's not about how many times you have sex, but when you have sex. And you had sex on the day of your cycle when you were most likely to conceive.

Danioyellow · 03/10/2025 08:37

Statistics aren’t going to help you, you either are or you aren’t. Take the map and hope for the best

Couldashouldawoulda · 03/10/2025 08:38

Or I think you can have a coil fitted within 5 days to cover you retrospectively, if you’re too late for the MAP.

SeptemberNCing · 03/10/2025 08:38

DH and I had drunken unprotected sex only once. I got pregnant.

It very much does happen.

Pleasegetmeacoffeesotired · 03/10/2025 08:39

Thanks, everyone. Yes, I know we've been very stupid here. I don't know what we were thinking tbh.

I was hoping to find some comfort in statistics, but, you're right that all I can do is get the map and wait.

GlassofRosePorfavor · 03/10/2025 08:40

Well it's 100% possible 😂

2chocolateoranges · 03/10/2025 08:41

I conceived first time both times!

dh thought we would have fun with months of trying and we had one night! 😂

LuckyNumberFive · 03/10/2025 08:42

MAP can only be taken up to 72 hours after as I remember it, so you're too late. But even then the idea is it delays ovulation, if you've already ovulated it wouldn't do anything anyway.

You can have the coil fitted up to 5 days after, but I'll be damned if you can find and get one fitted in the next 2 days. Our area has a 3-4 week wait, and same again for removal.

Yes you could quite easily be pregnant. Just a toss of a coin isn't it.

Outside9 · 03/10/2025 08:42

Assume it's 100% if you were ovulating and you both have no fertility issues. Consider what you would do next. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Morning after pill is not effective after ovulation, contrary to general perception.

Poppins2016 · 03/10/2025 08:44

I conceived DS with only one instance of unprotected sex. As you know, it happens!

Pleasegetmeacoffeesotired · 03/10/2025 08:44

Looks like map is out of the question too then. I definitely won't be able to get a coil fitted in the next two days.

It wouldn't be the end of the world but it would put some things on hold for a while.

Would a private appointment to fit the coil be cheaper than changing or cancelling whatever big life plans would be affected by an unplanned pregnancy?

Big life plans are being paid for by my husband's employer so, technically, no it wouldn't be cheaper. Our move date would have to be pushed back though.

I do already have private insurance but it would take longer than two days to get a referral.

DC1 wa conceived as you describe. We very wrongly assumed it would be almost as easy with DC2. We have almost ten years between DC1&2. Is it impossible?absolutely not, but statistics won't really help, nor MAP.

Tillow4ever · 03/10/2025 09:09

Obviously if you are pregnant, you do have options open to you that don’t include continuing the pregnancy if you don’t want to. There’s no shame in making that choice if it’s the right one for you - and the earlier you make it, the easier it is from what I understand. It’s not something I’ve done myself, so I can’t give a personal perspective, I’m going on what I have read on here previously.

it isn’t ideal, and if you do find you are pregnant, you need to make sure going forwards your contraception is sorted (not just you, your DH needs to step up here too - presumably he knew you weren’t on the pill, and given you say it’s to do with his work this big life change, he should have taken the responsibility of using a condom if he didn’t want those plans disrupting).

Good luck and I hope you don’t find yourself having to make a decision in 2 weeks time.

ThatLilacTiger · 03/10/2025 09:13

Having unprotected sex just before ovulation is like the only way to get pregnant 'naturally' so I don't think the chances are low at all. It's literally how it's done.

Babies just kind of happen sometimes though. My daughter squeaked through when I wasn't looking and the timing was pretty crap (just started a new, more senior job) but whatever, fuck around and find out init. She's the best baby girl who ever lived and the light of my life now, so even if you are pregnant, you'll just work your life out around it and love them to bits no matter what.

fancyfrogs · 03/10/2025 10:05

I am in exactly the same position. We have 2 DC - first was conceived within 2 cycles and 2nd was from unprotected sex once the day before ovulation. Got a bit carried away a few days ago, the day before I ovulated. We definitely do want a 3rd and had a conversation about it a couple of months ago maybe starting to try after xmas, so not the end of the world by any means if it happened now but would also affect some plans we have for next year! See what happens in 2 weeks if AF arrives or not I guess.

The statistics say there’s around a 10-33% chance (they usually just state 20% as a ballpark figure) of conception during ovulation. So there’s still a significant chance of not being pregnant. In fact, a higher chance of not being pregnant, than being pregnant xx

Just replying to correct myself. That’s during ovulation. The day before is 42%. So still a higher chance that you’re not, but the odds are less favourable.
