I am 41yrs old and on my first cycle of clomid. I forgot to ask at the clinic: how big must any developing folicles be before they will do IUI? Any ideas what is viable? ...Also...if 3 develop, what is the % chance of ending up with triplets?

'Hi GD, its the 'Try to relax'bit I'm having difficulty with - not sleeping well with worry of a multiple birth. I have a fab little 2 yr old boy but developed endo and fibroids after him so had to have a lap/hyst to remove - just don't think I would cope with multiples at my age! you?

Hi gals, am having IUI tomorrow (aaghh!) for the first time and have 3 follicles. Was not realy listening properly but from what I recall one was 40mm other two about 16mm. OBgyn did not think smaller 2 would ovulate - but we'll see. From what I have read elsewhere on site, 40mm seems huge?

MrsFC yes 40mm sounds massive! I have just done IVF and they wanted the follicles to get to 18-20mm before giving me the hCG drug to 'ripen' then for ov (or egg collection in my case)

Good luck NMM and GD. Just got back from Doc and I was obviously in shock last time I saw him - not hearing things properly. My biggest follicle was NOT 40mm but 24mm and the other two 14mm - got my 4's muddled!
Anyway, went ahead as he said it was extremely unlikely the two smaller ones would ovulate. Will let you know in a couple of weeks. Babadooba - as the others have said and I have found out today, the chance of multiples is small - you really need to listen to your doc and take their advice - they won't do IUI if it is too risky for multiples as it puts you all at risk. also make sure you take someone with you to listen to all the info - clearly I got it wrong - not helped by the fact that my husband is too busy to come with me and I had my toddler lying on the bed with me during IUI!!

Phew MrsFC I thought 40mm sounded rather large (and probably very painful too) I had 8 follicles on each side that were between 17 and 14mm and that was uncomfortable to say the least! However from 16 follicles I got 14 eggs, of which 10 fertilised but only 2 were any good by day 3 (when they put them back) so I'd say the chances for conceiving multiples from 3 eggs is small given those stats. I think they have to warn you of it though. Good luck

Can't imagine the stress of IVF NMM... when should you know if its successful?

nomoremagnolia · 04/06/2008 12:33

Should know the weekend after next (14/15th). I haven't found it too stressful in terms of the physical stuff, though it has put my realtionship with DH under a lot of pressure but I think FTC does that to any couple anyway.
