Hi All,

For various reasons we will prob only get chance to BD once next cycle so I realise chances are v limited. My question is, would you go for it on actual day of ovulation or 3 days before if you had to choose between these options?

thanks

Westcoaster85 · 02/09/2025 18:32

Thank you :) That’s good to know but I thought it could also take a while for sperm to be in right place and right form to fertilise egg?

Three days before.

Have been having fertility treatment for a number of years and Drs explained to me that once you ovulate and an egg is released, it is only viable for about 12 hours (not 24 as previously thought) and in IVF nearly all successful conceptions happen within the first six hours, so it is viable only a very short time.

Although sperm can travel to the egg within an hour they have to go through a process called Capacitation to become able to fertilise an egg, which takes about 8-12 hours. So if you were to have sex the same time as ovulating (very hard to predict of course just using home ovulation tests!), then likely it would be too late.

Sperm lasts on average 2-3 days, and some up to 5, so having it waiting by sex in advance is preferable.

good luck!

it’s so confusing isn’t it?! So many studies out there and ovulation trackers like clear blue use the data they want you to see!

I have seen in studies that the best is actually a day or two days before ovulation , but looks like OP didn’t have this option

When to TTC and sperm & egg quality

There is a lot of confusion about when, during a woman’s cycle, is the best time to try to conceive (TTC). The confusion arises from: a lack of understanding on how long an egg can survive after ovulation if not fertilized, how long sperm survive in t...
