Measuring behind at 6w0d

First of all, I know no one can give me a definitive answer to this, but having been in this situation before (with a negative outcome), I’m interested to hear other people’s experiences.

This is my sixth pregnancy, and I have one child. I had a scan today at 6w0d (I’m pretty sure of my dates and had a strong positive on 24/6) and was measuring at 5w2d (CRL 2.8mm) with a heartbeat. This was with an abdominal scan.

I was surprised the sonographer saw anything without an internal scan, to be honest, and it could mean that the measurements aren’t as precise as they could be, but I’m feeling pessimistic to be measuring so far behind. I was in a similar situation back in 2021 - measured behind at just over six weeks (though I can’t remember whether I saw a heartbeat then or not), saw a heartbeat at 8w4d and miscarried at 9w0d.

I’ve booked a (private) follow up scan for just under two weeks time, so all I can really do is wait, but I wondered if anyone else has been in a similar position and what the outcome was, whether positive or negative!

Hello.

I hope you get some positive responses. I have been in a similar situation this last couple of weeks. I was measuring 4w5 when I was supposed to be 5w5, and then last week I was measuring 6w5 when I was supposed to be 7w5.

I scoured the internet and found lots and lots of people in a similar situation and it was totally fine and everything caught up.

In my case, I found out today we had miscarried. I had other things going on - slow rising betas at the start, and my sac measurement was exceptionally small even for the revised dates. The writing was on the wall for me unfortunately. I hope you have a different experience. ❤️

Thanks for replying, @RooneyRu, and I’m really sorry to hear about your miscarriage. Was this your first pregnancy?

Because I’ve had recurrent miscarriages, I find it difficult to have much optimism that this pregnancy will be a success, but I’m trying not to overthink it (whilst posting threads on mumsnet - clearly failed at the first hurdle there 😂)

Just keep in mind that the baby is soooo tiny at this point that even just a tiny difference in where they click will make a difference, literal millimetres. I’d really try not to worry unless you’re given a real reason to. The fact that there was a heartbeat is always reassuring. Sending you the best of luck xx

@greglet it's my 5th pregnancy (2 MMC, 2 chemicals (v early so never know if to count these or not) and one live birth in 2022.

My 2022 preg was conceived quickly, easily and without any issues. A total breeze.

All my losses have been in the last 12m tying for our second.

I know what you mean about overthinking and hanging around on Mumsnet. In my opinion, you don't girl! Whatever it takes to get through it....

RooneyRu · 11/07/2025 17:14

Meant to say you do you girl 😂😂

greglet · 11/07/2025 17:34

@RooneyRuwe’re in such similar situations! I’ve had one chemical, two blighted ova, one MMC and a live birth in 2022.

Secondary infertility is apparently really common, not that that helps when you’re going through it. Fingers crossed for a successful outcome for you soon!

I have also been in a similar position.Went for a scan at 7 weeks 3days but only measured 6wks1day with a strong heartbeat.Even though sonographer said all great I knew it wasn't.I held on to the tinest bit of hope though that because it was an abdominal scan it may not have been as percise as an internal scan.Went for another scan a week later and was still measuring 6 weeks 1 day and heartbeat still there. Finally miscarried at 9 weeks 5 days.I hope you have better a outcome.x

@Firefly42Thanks for sharing; I hope you had a successful pregnancy in the end. I suspect I may end up in a similar situation, but we’ll see.

Being a couple of days behind can be completely normal. I had ivf and knew exact dates and I still measured 5 days behind at my 7 week scan. That baby is now 3.5yrs old. I also had other things going on like slow hcg rise, and some heavier spotting.

@Miraclemuma03Thanks for sharing and I’m really pleased it all worked out for you!
