Sperm analysis advice

Hoping for some advice please.

My husband took an at home sperm analysis test (GP appointment was a long wait) and it showed good motility and count. That’s all they can test it doesn’t show morphology or abnormalities in shape.

I’ve googled a lot to try and find out if it’s likely to have good count and motility but bad morphology. He is adamant he doesn’t need to do a test in clinic as this showed no issues (and we already have a child so in his mind, nothing is wrong his side).

Anyone had results from a clinic that I can compare to please?

Hi! I can only speak from personal experience but morphology was a real issue for us. Definitely worth getting it tested as you can have high count but if the little guys are misshapen they won’t get very far!

@BHL thank you for sharing your experience. What can you do about morphology? Is it just IVF?

There is actually quite a lot that can be done though many drs will revert straight to IVF (or icsi). There are lots of dietary supplements that can help, no drinking, smoking etc.

we also found out too late that one of the key causes of poor morphology is something called a ‘variocele’ which is like a twisted / varicose vein around the scrotum. This causes everything to get a bit too warm, and therefore poorly formed swimmers, but is often undiagnosed.

easily fixed if identified and present! Then takes about 3 months before they advise testing again.

good luck!!

Hiya, morphology is an important factor as mentioned by another poster. My partners just had his results and his sperm count is very high along with motility being good but his morphology is 1%.

Thank you @SWeal for sharing. What was the advice to help with morphology

Hi.

My OH did a test himself and everything came back fine. We did do one via clinic after as we could only be put forward for fertility help with one via clinic and he actually had 3 issues with his sperm. Motility, shape and amount.

I’d get another one done “properly”.

EmberR · 09/07/2025 21:59

Thank you for sharing @HariboFantastics I did think a clinic test would be much more reliable.

i will ask him to book it in and do it properly.

@EmberR Sorry, i’ve only just seen this! He has to stop smoking (obvious one I know), taking vitamins (which i’ve ordered in abundance lol). COQ10, fenugreek, selenium, maca root and proceive. He’s also taking folic acid as read that can help. They’ve booked another test for 3 months time to see if any changes, but i’ve seen threads on here where they’ve taken those vitamins and the morphology has gone from 1% to 4% in 3 months xx
