Hello. Dh and I have been talking about trying for another baby. Our DD is 5months and I am still bresfeeding her. My periods returned straight away, despite the BF so hoping that is a good sign. We havent been using contraception at all since she was born, but not particually tried either iyswim. I am definatey not pregnant though (came on yesterday).

I have never been in this situation before (DD was conceived by accident as I was on the pill)

My friend, who had her DD the same week as me, announced she is now pregant with no2 yesterday. It made me realise how much I wanted another one.

Anyway, sorry I a blabbering but thought you should know the full story as I will be posing on here for a while!

basically.....
I need to know where to start! It may sound silly but when is the best time of the month etc to ttc? I am seriously clueless on the subject!

How likely am I to be able to get pregnant while BF? DD has started weaning if that makes a difference?

If your periods returned straight away, then its possible you are ovulating. It depends on how long your cycle is,as to when you would ovulate. If its 28 days, then you wwould probably be ovulating around day 14,so this would mean that the optimum time to ttc is Day 11-16 or so. If its longer or shorter then the optimum time would cahnge accordingly. You may be awre that you are ovulating, some people are aware of a sharp pain/ache on one side around this time, and your Vaginal mucus is usually more around this time, and clear. If you werent ovulating whilst BF exclusively as you start to wean and cut the feeds down then you should start to ovulate then. Some docs tell you to take your temp at the same time every morning, and its supposed to jump up a little (if you see it plotted on a graph)on the day you ovulate.
Alternatively, you could buy an ovulation kit.HTH. Good Luck

Thanks nursejo. I have no idea how long my cycle is as my periods are so irregular. They always have been, even when on the pill. Dont suppose anybody knows how to work it out when irregular?

How do the ovulation kits work? Are they expensive? Do you need to buy more than once?

go for jotting down some dates and figure out how long your cycle is to start with, then go for the middle to conceive.
Good luck (and have fun trying)

Yes agree with GW,if you write down the date you start, and then when you finish, count how long the cycle is,and write that in your diary,do this for a few months, and you should see an average, then sort out the days in the middle, and ......!

Wilkinsons and some of the cheaper chemists such as Lloyds etc. will sell them, should have a range of prices to suit your pocket.I believe theres more than 1 test inside each one.

Are you sure they were irregular even when on the pill?Thats unusual,I don't want to insult your intelligence, but have met a few women who werent aware how to count their cycles ie.Day 1 is the day you come on.Doesnt matter how long your cycle is,or how long you bleed for.

Usually you dont have a "period" with the pill just a "withdrawal bleed" which comes 2-4 days roughly after you take Day 21 pill, and then you have 7 days without a pill, and then start again, regardless of if you are still bleeding.(Unlesss ofcourse you take the type that is 28 days worth.)HTH.

definately irregular, ie. one time i may have 2 months between a period, the next may then come 2 weeks later then 1 month etc. Hence why I didnt know I was pregnant for 2 months!
