Carrying a toddler?

Is it safe to carry a toddler (3 year old) around when you may be pregnant. As you arnt meant to carry heavy things.

What is classed as heavy?

My three year old fell asleep on my last night on the sofa so I ended up carrying her to bed.

Is this safe?

The only reason you arent suppsed to carry heavy things is to protect yourself. You can strain yourself more easily when pg.
The baby will not be affected at all

Yes is is safe but just be careful how you lift them up xx

By being careful I would make sure that where possible you bend your knees and lift from the bottom half of your body rather than taking the strain on your tummy or back.

If you don't have a history of MC I wouldn't have thought you'd need to worry, personally, I'd try to avoid lifting anything heavier than usual and you'll be well used to lifting your toddler.

When I was pregnant with DD2 my DD1 was 4 years old. She has Down's syndrome and at 4 was still not walking at all and couldn't stand on her own without support. So I carried her throughout my whole pregnancy and she was no lightweight 4 yr old either. She lived on my hip and I had to get her in and out of car seats, up and down stairs, in and out of bed and baths, everything. didn't do any of us any harm. Just be a bit careful. TC x

Jackie, you said you 'may' be pg. I'm guessing that you haven't done a test and it's only been a few weeks, or even days? If so you've got lots of time before the strain issue becomes a problem. You might feel more reassured talking to a midwife when you've had your first scan.

i have a 'hippy chick' hip seat. its like a big belt you wear, with a wdge out one side that your dc sits on. it helps keep your spine straight. might not work in later stages of pg, as it prob wouldnt fit, but might help in early pg if your concerned. i agree with mrsthierryhenry though, think it's only be in later stages, when your muscles are more relaxed due to increased hormone levels, that you'd need to be carful?
