TTC - Spotting before period

Hey.

I am TTC, currently been trying for 5 cycles. I know this is not a long time but as anyone trying to conceive knows it starts to consume you.

I always get brown discharge around 3-5 days before my period comes. It’s a tiny amount and only shows on tissue when wiping for a day at the most. I really don’t know how long I’ve had this for but it’s more than a year. I always thought it was fine and never worried about it. However now I’m TTC I’m worrying about everything!

Does anyone else get this? Or did anyone get this every month and still manage to conceive?

You might need progesterone if the brown spotting is meaning that your luteal phase is too short. You really need a clear ten days post ovulation to be sure it's long enough. If you haven't got that I'd contact your GP. Best of luck x

I’ve not yet managed to conceive successfully since we started trying for a second but I get spotting before my period. It usually starts at 8-10dpo with my period starting at 12-13dpo. I’m taking progesterone this cycle.

I did and conceived perfectly fine! Took about 3 months.

I even had it the month I conceived so I was convinced it hadn't worked!

Meagain24 · 16/02/2025 16:43

@RoseannesMamma this is my second too, and I really can’t remember if I had this first time round or not. Can you?
Did you go to the GP? Did they run some tests and then prescribe just that?

thanks so much for replying!

@Mushroo this makes me feel better thank you! Did you have it every cycle? That was actually going to be my next question if someone did conceive did that still get this brown discharge on the month they conceived.

@Meagain24 yup every single one! I got my bloods done at the doctors because I was worried and they came back fine.

It was always useful because I've never been caught out by a surprise period!

The month I conceived I did seed cycling, but like I say, it only took 3 months anyway so probably a coincidence

Meagain24 · 16/02/2025 17:17

@Mushroo i’ve never heard of seed cycling but i just googled! Did you do this specifically for fertility benefits?

Yup! It was one of those things that could be nothing, but I like seeds anyway so it was a really easy thing to try, I just sprinkled a few on my morning porridge.

I had this - repeatedly spotting every month a few days after ovulation until my period came. The first time I started getting it was years ago. I've ruined so many nice pairs of knickers as a result! After taking a vitamin D supplement, it stopped completely and my periods went back to how they were when I was much younger.

I say this because I think a lot of us are vitamin D deficient in the UK and if you are then it affects your hormones.

Meagain24 · 18/02/2025 14:48

@Lyannaa oooh that’s interesting thank you, but for me I’ve been taking a vit d supplement for around 6 months so I don’t think it’s that for me.

i literally get one very very small amount once when I wipe and that’s it, but happens every month

Hi there @Meagain24 , just wondering if you had any luck TTC? I'm in the same situation as you now and starting to worrying the spotting means something is wrong

I’ve spotted since my periods come and conceived my DD first try. I always thought it was normal and nice polite notice that my period was due in the next day or two.

Crazybeaglelady · 08/10/2025 19:25

@Qwerty93 that's reassuring to know! Ive had 2 pregnancies before(1 loss at 17weeks) but never had this spotting until this time TTC. It's only a tiny amount 2-3 days before AF. But I've read so much about low progesterone that I'm worried something is different this time!

Meagain24 · 08/10/2025 19:35

@Crazybeaglelady Yes! I’m currently 37 weeks pregnant. Had it every month including the month I conceived. It’s not something I’ve always had probably just the last year or 2. Also read lots of stuff about hormones and worried a lot about it but yeah it didn’t seem to be an issue when ttc for me.
