Feel like I’m losing the plot

Hi all,

Myself and my husband have recently decided we wish ttc for baby no. two. We only recently decided this, so wasn’t expecting anything to happen so quickly and know it can take some time! Last week what I thought was my period came five days earlier than normal (normally like clockwork) but the bleeding was different and was a mix between light watery bleeding to heavy flow and only lasted about three days.

Fast forward to this week and I haven’t been feeling 100%, some of the symptoms were similar to how I felt early pregnancy with my first child, so I decided to test on Thursday (despite thinking it would be negative given the ‘period’ I just had). I ordered a load of the one step strip tests off amazon and to my complete shock I could see a bfp?! Tested again a couple more times and all showing faint positives, I’ve tested this morning with a different brand of test to just confirm the bfp but this test has come back negative? I’m so confused and feel like I’m losing the plot! Took another one step this morning (last image with plant pot on show) and I feel like I could be seeing things but can still see two lines unless it’s an evap?

I’ve seen these one step tests have a bit of a reputation so don’t know what to think? Do I just assume they’re all evap? Or go and get bloods done at docs? Any advice appreciated!

Could you buy a digital test and see what it says? Hope you get your positive!

RubyRedBow · 16/02/2025 08:55

Could have been implantation.

Thank you - I hope so too! I did buy a cb digital on Tuesday but wasn’t sure if it was too early to test and I took it later in the afternoon, it came back with ‘not pregnant’, this is why I’m so confused given the really faint positive this morning 😅!

This is my thoughts too - surprised if it was as one of the days the bleeding was quite heavy (sorry tmi)

I didn’t get any bleeding but similar story for us. Decided to start trying for baby number 2 this year. January was a month of “not really trying” as in no tracking etc. with a view of really trying in February, bought a pack of one step tests, got a faint positive 15th January. Now nearly 8 weeks and I take a weekly one step test just to use them up.
Fingers crossed for you. Bleeding can be implantation, hormonal changes, all kinds of things in early pregnancy. It is just a waiting game for the time being until you get a definite positive.

Thank you so much for this, that sounds reassuring and congratulations! We were the same, January we sort of just ‘went with it’ so I haven’t been tracking or able to pin point ovulation etc. but it’s frightening how much testing and different results can really get in your head. Our first baby was a complete surprise so haven’t experienced this before!

Bleeding could also be if you have fibroids, the HCG can make them grow/bleed sometimes. You wouldn't always know you have them unless on ultrasound or symptoms (I had no symptoms so was a surprise at the scan).

The One Step looks positive to me. I've used these a lot and never any indents or evaps, though I dip them into a cup not pee on them (not sure if you dip, but defo try that). The other tests might just not be as sensitive so either a Boots Early Response, First Response Early Response or CB Early Detection are your best bets.

The other awful situation (and I really hope this isn't the case) is that your period was a chemical and this HCG is just the remnants in your system. After my MC, my One Steps still showed a faint line until it was all cleared but was negative on other tests. It seems unlikely given your symptoms are increasing rather than decreasing. Definitely do one of the above tests to confirm.

I’m currently nearly 40wks with our second who was conceived the first time of trying off the back of us deciding we might want a sibling for DD so can totally happen that quickly. I think the digital test specifically tell you to test with FMU for a reliable reading so I’d be tempted to get another and try again in the morning in your shoes.

curliegirlie · 16/02/2025 12:33

One Steps are fine and those definitely look like early positives - congratulations! What was the other test? Could it just have been lower sensitivity?

Thank you for this, interesting about the fibroids! I did think there’s a possibility that it could be chemical, so I won’t rule it out just yet but yes I’ll defo buy a different brand of test and try again!

Thank you! The other tests were just Clear Response ones of Amazon, again just cheapies but they weren’t great at all they took forever just for the dye to start appearing! I’ll try again with a better brand :)

Ah congratulations - it’s amazing how quickly it can all happen! Yes think I’m going to try another digital but use FMU, I think the excitement for the better of me earlier this week and I rushed out to get a digital that afternoon! Thanks for commenting and good luck with the rest of your pregnancy x

Just to thicken the plot, took a CB just now and it’s a clear negative! 🥺 So I’m now just doubting whether one step strips were giving false positives the entire time or if it was a chemical pregnancy. I’ve got another test as it came in pack of two, so I’ll try again once more tomorrow morning. 🤞🏼

Yes, better to test with FMU as it's more concentrated. Do both the CB and One Step tomorrow morning for a comparison. Fingers crossed!

This morning both with FMU - so frustrating and misleading! I think I must have a bad batch of one step tests :/. I’ll try again next month!

The One Step actually look a bit darker or could just be light. How odd and confusing. Are those CB the early detection ones? The regular CB are not as sensitive as one step. If you can get some boots early response tests, those are the best ones as a final test. But yes, you'd expect to see something on any test if your period was last week. Sorry OP, but good luck for next time!

Yes these were the rapid detection CB ones! I think I’m just going to avoid further disappointment and hope for a positive in a few weeks time! I’ll grab some boots tests for that though, thanks for the reccomendation and your help!

Ah the rapid detection are not same as early detection. Rapid is just less wait time for a result, whereas early detection needs less HCG to give you the result. Definitely use early detection to compare as the one step are early detection.

Kels21 · 17/02/2025 10:43

I got constant positives with one step tests when I wasn’t pregnant! I’ve moved over to Premom tests. So far no positives when I’ve not been pregnant! Sending you lots of baby dust x

Thank you so much - it’s really misleading isn’t it! Quite naughty really as it’s an emotional rollercoaster as it is ttc!
