Heavy Bleeding but HCG has tripled

Hi have NC for this one.

I'm currently around 4 weeks pregnant really early days. I had heavy bleeding for 1 day with small clots and somewhat lighter but still very noticeable period like bleeding a day before and a day after (today).

I had bloods taken at the start of the week which came back very low and I was told too low to be viable, especially given the bleeding. I then had repeats bloods 48 hours later which have tripled. Still low numbers, but three times higher than they were. EPU are surprised by this given the bleeding I've had and the cramps.

Has anyone had this and had a successful pregnancy? Or any experiences with this at all.

I'm sorry, I'm no doctor or HCP and sorry for the worry this must have caused you.

Is there any possibility that you had twins and one didn't make it but the other one is fine?

YoungMacDonald · 14/02/2025 05:30

I'm sorry that you have so much worry at a time that should be full of excitement.

From your post, you have had heavy bleeds on Wednesday & Thursday. Your low but fast raising HCG was on Monday / Tuesday?

This could be a number of things. One of which is what you're fearing - an early loss. This could also be a hematoma which causes a heavy bleed in early pregnancy.

How low were your numbers earlier this week?

PregnantForNow · 14/02/2025 05:42

First blood was Tuesday - reading of 9. Given I had my first extremely faint line 2 days before (on a sensitive IC) that I was told it was too low to be viable. Then bloods taken Thursday were 3 times higher. It's obviously still low but EPU said the rise is more important than the number itself at this stage, as well as also telling me that I shouldn't be too hopeful. I'm trying not to be too hopeful but after being told I'd miscarried this news has obviously given me hope.

The twin thing is basically the only way I could see that has this end with a viable pregnancy. But I've never heard of a hematoma before.

This is this morning's test. The thing is I have no idea what HCG looks like on a test at 30 or 60 or anything so all this really tells me is that I've still got HCG in my system - I knew that! I guess I'm somewhere between 15-19 DPO. I had the blood taken as the tests were faint and I was experiencing cramping and spotting (at the time - it hadnt got to proper flow yet on Tuesday). I've got a history of loss and ectopic so extreme anxiety. My bloods never showed a tripling rise with my ectopic or other loss. Obviously very scared about ectopic again which is what prompted the the blood tests, but they explained a slow/low rise is what they expect with an ectopic.

The test looks about right for 15 / 16 dpo.
So on Tuesday, you might have only been 12dpo? If so, HCG of 9 at 12dpo isn't terribly low.

EPU may well want to continue with bloods every 2-3 days for the time being. Ectopics usually have a slower rising HCG rate so the likely course of action will be a watch and wait approach. I know how terribly upsetting this is for you at the moment given your history.

PregnantForNow · 14/02/2025 06:35

That's exactly what is next, more bloods, watch and wait and hope for the best. There was so much blood I can't understand how I could still be having a normal pregnancy, but is such a major head fuck to be told you've had a miscarriage, experience so much bleeding and then be given this small cautious nugget of hope. I don't really believe there will be a healthy baby at the end of this but I am just hoping so much that I won't have to suffer another ectopic.

I wish I could be scanned and just check where the pregnancy is located but they've said they won't be able to find it yet.

OP posts:
YoungMacDonald · 14/02/2025 07:21

An ectopic is unlikely to present on a scan until 5-6 weeks unfortunately. At this stage, bloods are the only way to monitor the pregnancy.

Your next set of bloods will provide more clarity and depending on the results, you might be booked in for a scan the week after next.

A subchorionic hematoma is still a possibility - they are incredibly common in early pregnancy and cause heavy bleeding but not necessarily the loss of the pregnancy.

PregnantForNow · 14/02/2025 14:04

I have been reading about those. Obviously I'm praying that's what this is as means my baby should be okay.

I don't know what I'm hoping for here. I want to see a rise as that means the chances of the baby having survived are better. But I'm scared of a rise that means it's ectopic and getting bigger in the wrong place.

More bloods tomorrow and everything crossed for a happy outcome to this somehow.

Hi op sorry you're going through this 😔 I had heavy bleeding not long after a loss and I was convinced it was another miscarriage, passed massive clots at around 9wks so it seemed unfathomable that the pregnancy was viable. I even told close family and friend it was happening again, DH called my work and told them the situation. We were told we needed to wait until maternity opened in the morning for a scan as they had better equipment. We spent all night mourning another loss and what the future looked like for us... scan in the morning showed a perfect heartbeat 😊 and it turned out to be a haematoma which did cause a few more bleeds but DC was and is a perfectly fine little miracle. Praying things work out well for you op ❤️

PregnantForNow · 17/02/2025 04:41

Hey @RBowmama thank you so much for your happy story.

My bloods have had another 200% rise. They now don't want to take any more bloods as have said that's enough for them to see a good pattern of high rising. I've got a scan booked for next week and really just praying I'll see the baby is in the right place on it.

My bloods are still low in numbers but apparently the rise is what matters most.

Good luck! Hoping everything is positive for you ❤️

I had very low numbers and was told to expect a miscarriage. I started having cramping and doctors were very convinced. So much so they prescribed the pill to take to have a break from trying. Week 6-7 the levels suddenly shot up and my little boy is here now. (They had been showing as levels for 1-2 weeks till that sudden jump, so for a long time) I gather pregnancy can be very unpredictable and in my case even pregnancy tests and levels you can't go by 😅

This is fantastic news. It's still early days but these increases are a really positive sign!

PregnantForNow · 26/02/2025 07:27

My scan is now only two days away. I don't know how on earth I've managed to wait this long. This is my most recent test and last few days - bottom most recent. Please be honest. Would you be worried? They are all Wondfo.

I would say they are wonderful lines! Good luck! 🤞

YoungMacDonald · 26/02/2025 09:15

Those lines are pretty decent considering they are the strip test design. I never got a 'dye stealer' using one step branded strip tests and I continued to test until my first scan at 6 weeks.

I think it's always wise to keep a positive but realistic mind set at this stage but after previous losses, you don't need me telling you that.

Wishing you tons of luck for your scan!

Pinkdreams · 26/02/2025 09:27

Chg definitely getting stronger you can see from the lines, congratulations xx

PregnantForNow · 26/02/2025 09:37

Thank you ladies. Bit stressed as got a '2-3 weeks' reading on a clearblue digital and really would have expected a 3+ by now but I am trying not to put all my faith into a supermarket £10 test. As my husband keeps telling me - if they were the gold standard the NHS would simply give them on prescription and save the considerable cost of a scan.

I just hope so much it will be good news. I'm actually surprised looking at how faint the test was that I posted here 12 days ago, I have been chucking the old strips every few days so I guess I hadn't realised just how much darker they had got in comparison. I just really hope it's enough and that it will be viable.

I've made it this far, I can make it another couple of days. I know at least that the bleeding didn't mean the end of the pregnancy, as otherwise my lines would be barely whispers by now. But not ending doesn't mean everything is good. I wish the scan was today!

falalalalaaaaaaaa · 03/03/2025 02:15

Hey @PregnantForNow, how did the scan go in the end? Hope you're doing okay Flowers

YoungMacDonald · 03/03/2025 06:47

Was thinking the same as pp this morning. I hope you're ok and all is well.

PregnantForNow · 03/03/2025 08:12

Hi ladies my scan didn't show anything and they said it was too early still as my HCG was at 1200 the day of the scan. The last reading has been 82, 11 days prior so the HCG has gone up loads. I think it's still going up as tests are getting darker and darker and I've been feeling and being sick in the mornings.

I have another scan on Friday where hopefully I see the baby and praying they will be in the right place ❤️

OP posts:
PregnantForNow · 03/03/2025 08:14

This is this morning's test x

OP posts:
YoungMacDonald · 03/03/2025 08:23

I can't see the pic of your latest test yet but if you've gone from 82 to 1200 in 11 days then that's good. It corresponds with the expected doubling of 2-3 days so from that aspect, your pregnancy seems to be heading in the right direction.

PregnantForNow · 03/03/2025 16:34

Attached! This was extremely diluted after 2 hour hold - it still came up instantly.

I am obviously now convinced I am pregnant (I mean I know that to be true I just still can't quite believe it) and I'm also certain it's an ongoing pregnancy. Before I had been worried I had residual HCG post miscarriage (the bleeding). But now I'm certain it's progressing - it's just either going to be a normal pregnancy or ectopic at this case, but this is higher HCG than I ever had with an ectopic before. Which is a bit scary as if it is ectopic the chances of surgery are higher the more HCG you have. But mostly I'm trying to just be positive for now, as the only negative symptom I have had was the bleeding 3 weeks ago now. Maybe this is my time.
