How would i know when to do a test as don't know if 'late'?

if you have symptoms, wait a week or two then do a test

in the meantime assume you could be, if you have been trying / if there is a possibility you might be

I only realised I was pregnant the month after I stopped breast feeding when I spent a week unable to get up off the sofa as I was too tired and felt a little nauseated in the mornings. There is no hurry to find out so I think it is reasonable to wait until you have pregnancy symptoms before testing. It was fun going to the midwife and explaining that my last period was 18 months earlier, particularly as she tried to convince me that the exact date would be helpful in dating this pregnancy.

if you had unprotected sex 2 + weeks ago, a pregnancy test should give you an accurate result.
