High TSH - any advice

Mae2B · 17/01/2025 16:07

I had a chemical 2 cycles ago, and so I've ordered a hertility test. Besides egg quantity issues, the thyroid marker TSH was also much higher than ideal for ttc.
The GP will refer me to a fertility clinic and I asked if I should be on low dose levothyroxine in the meantime to lower TSH, but the GP brushed it off and said the fertility clinic would manage that...

Anyway, I've now had a BFP on a digital and I'm really scared of another loss because I've also read high TSH can promote miscarriages (so it doesn't just affect fertility). I know losses can happen for many other reasons but I like to control what I can control. So should I go back to the GP and ask for levothyroxine considering I might not see the fertility clinic any time soon?

Anyone had any successful pregnancies with TSH > 2.5?

A TSH of 2.5 isn't high. It's well within range

I meant above 2.5. My TSH is 3.97 which is considerably over 2.5 I'd say.

I had bloods done a couple of months before TTC and my TSH was 3.41. It was within range so thought nothing of it. I had no problem conceiving and had a healthy pregnancy. Congrats on your BFP!

Mae2B · 17/01/2025 18:09

@gemini167 thank you 🙏🏻 and that's really reassuring, thanks for letting me know!

A good GP should be able to treat this. I don't know how high it would need to be to be linked to miscarriage so I'm sorry I've no advice there, but I am aware of the link. My worry would be that you'd be waiting a long time for the fertility referral. Could you get a second opinion from a GP? Or privately see an endocrinologist? My hospital has an endocrinology service GP can refer you to basically as early as you have a BFP to get bloods and meds reviewed (but I know that's not the same everywhere and we're privileged to have the service.) Worth asking if something similar exists though.
And congratulations!

So I had blood tests at the GP last week and the point was progesterone but apparently they added more tests and the TSH is 2.31 so within the ideal limit 😱🥹 I don't understand how it could go from 3.97 to 2.31 without medication in just 6-7weeks, but I'll take it. One was via a prick finger test and these ones were at the GP, but there shouldn't be that much variance I think, and although they were taken at different cycle days I also dont think thyroid markers vary with the cycles. Interesting isn't it?

Can’t comment on TSH but I had similar, out of range with Hertility but within range from gp bloods!

Mae2B · 20/01/2025 13:01

@1woodpecker really? That's interesting!! And within a short period of time as well? And was it the only test that was much different?

Yes mine weren’t that far apart - it was oestrogen and testosterone. So I went to gp convinced of issues that they then felt were fine as tests normal. So confusing!

Hi,

After 3 previous miscarriages most recent last month - My GP has referred me to the recurrent miscarriage clinic, however while i wait for that appoint my GP wanted to take my bloods.

My TSH have come back at 4.7, so I'm really hoping to be treated soon, as actively trying to conceive.

How are you getting on OP?

Mae2B · 06/02/2025 21:54

@Aandk64 sadly I miscarried over the weekend. I hope you get the medication you need and this solves it for you 🤞🏻 good luck!

I am very sorry about your miscarriage.

The British Thyroid Foundation has a help line number for pregnancy.

As far as I am aware there are links between an increased or high TSH and miscarriage but as you know there can be other reasons.

I would request a full set of thyroid bloods and actually if you can afford it, request a referral to an endocrinologist who will be able to advise about optimum levels for your thyroid.

I have taken levothyroxin fkr 35 years after surgery to remove 7/8ths of my thyroid due to graves.

I had multiple miscarriages but was also mid to late thirties during pregnancies. It's impossible to determine what caused which one. At that time, it wasn't always thought appropriate to increase levo during pg because the link wasn't strongly established but my TSH went up to 5 when I was pg with DS1 and he came 3.5 weeks early. They should have been testing it but didn't until 36 weeks. I'll never know what would have happened if the Levo had been upped.

In any event, I did have two children and they are grown up now so good luck.

I'm so sorry to hear about your miscarriage, it's heart breaking 💔 😢 I'm at the doctors next Thursday so hopefully they will give me something x

Aandk64 · 23/02/2025 12:25

Well the doctors just said they would have to test me again in 3 months and to call back if I get pregnant again.. after a BFP 2 days ago, looks like I'll be calling them tomorrow for advice 🤞 x

Mae2B · 27/02/2025 17:59

@Aandk64 congratulations!! That's amazing 🤩 what did they suggest?

Thank you, they have left me a blood test form to collect which will test my levels again and referred me for an early scan in a few weeks🤞

Mae2B · 28/02/2025 07:32

@Aandk64 all the best to you! I hope they give you the support you deserve and this is it for you 🤞🏻
