Confused

Hello I was wondering if anyone could help me.

I went for my first scan yesterday expecting to be shown an 8 week baby in there but sonographer said it only looks just over 6 weeks as there was only a sac & no actually embryo yet.
im due to go back in 2 weeks for a repeat scan but I don’t understand why I’m only 6 weeks and not 8?
my lmp matches up to being 8 weeks as well as the time we had unprotected sex right near ovulation. The doctor told me to expect a miscarriage as it’s not showing where I should be.

I had this. It sadly ended in a blighted ovum. Sometimes though the embryo does develop slower than it should, but if there is no yolk sack or fetal pole then gently prepare yourself for bad news. I found a few miracle stories online when I was going through it and convinced myself that I would have the same outcome as them and it really hit me hard when I got the bad news.
