Sister just found out today she has severe PCOS and a polyp plus BIl sperm is not very good either

She has her name on a waiting list for an op to remove the polyp .

But is understandably very upset can anyone tell me their experiences of this and what their chances maybe of getting pregnant

Thankyou x

Hi,

It was only when having diathermy surgery (for PCOS) that it was discovered I had a uterine polyp as well.

PCOS is a very individualistic disorder and can affect each woman with it very differently.

The polyp is not in itself harmful and probably is congenital (i.e there from birth). These can cause problems though with conception as they can release hormones.

Hopefully they will operate on her polycystic ovaries (a procedure called laparoscopic ovarian diathermy can be performed to laser the cystic follicles on the ovaries. This can kickstart ovulation in some cases) as well as dealing with the polyp.

She needs to be fully conversant on what type of operation that they will be performing.

If BIL has only had one semen analysis this in itself is not fully conclusive of there being male factor problems. In any event more tests should be carried out.

Your sister may also want to look at Verity's website as this offers advice and support to women with PCOS - their web address is www.verity-pcos.org.uk. There is no one therapy or treatment that will completely eradicate PCOS but it can be controlled (some women find following a low GI eating plan helpful).

I would say to her to educate herself further re PCOS as it will help her when it comes to making treatment decisions.

HTH

i have pcos and was told when i was 18 "you will never have children" this is obviously not the case as i have a 3 year old but at the time i thought it was the end of the world. what im trying to say is she will get a lot of people telling her stuff that she really should ignore.
