Hello, long time lurker and first time posting. Just asking for some advice and what others would recommend doing. Also so sorry I’m not great with the acronyms used here!

I am TTC and we only just started last month. This month I’ve bought OPKs, just cheap Clear and Simple sticks. My cycle is 24/25 days according to the Flo app and I started testing two days before the app thought I would ovulate which was cycle day 10. Not one test has been positive, so I also bought more expensive Clear Blue digital tests and they’re saying the same thing.

I am wondering if I am ovulating earlier than expected and if I should have tested straight after my period ended? But it’s also making me really really concerned I am not ovulating at all and reading some women have periods as normal but don’t ovulate. My periods are usually quite heavy day 1-2, then light and last 5/6 days. My entire life they are usually earlier than 28 days, I’ve been off the pill for two years.

Earlier this year I did miss a period for the first time ever in my life and I think this was due to not ovulating as I’d ran a marathon! It came back the week after. Also to add I’m 35, and so worried I’ve left it too late. My husband and I also have busy work schedules and have to travel away a lot during the week so it would be so helpful to know what time I am ovulating.

Wondering what others experiences are with OPKs, should I leave using them until next cycle and test straight after my period or keep going as I could be ovulating later? Would you see a doctor with these results? Thank you!

Hi OP, I’d really try not to worry yet. Some people peak & then come back down really quickly, so if only testing once a day then you could easily miss it. Wait until your next period comes and then test daily so you see your whole cycle but watch symptoms too as you may be able to spot ovulation based on that alone.

No need to see a doctor until you’ve been actively trying for 12 months with no success, or I think it’s 6 months at age 35.

Thank you so much and for being so kind. I feel a lot better. There’s nobody to really talk to about this!

I know it is such a difficult time! When we were trying for my daughter last year I was so shocked by how much it took over my mind completely, if there is any advice I would give above all else it’s honestly to try and relax. You’ve only just started trying, for lots of people it takes over a year of trying, there’s plenty of time for ovulation testing, worrying, planning sex etc, the best thing you can do when starting is to just relax and go with regular sex throughout your cycle. One of the worst things you can be when trying to conceive is stressed and although ovulation tests etc can be helpful they do also bring with them their own host of stresses and that really is the last thing you need. X

Hello,

Just wanted to message again to say thank you for being so kind when I was really stressed! Turns out I didn’t need the OPKs as I got pregnant regardless! I am now 7 weeks, and had my first booking in appt yesterday. But it was really nice of you to reassure me during a time when I was losing my marbles a bit.

Best wishes to you! x
