Laparascopy question

Can anyone who's had this procedure tell me if you think I'll be able to go skiing 2 or 3 days after a laparascopy? + does it leave a scar?

I had it done, under general. Personally, I wouldn't have been able to go ski-ing, as I was still washed out after the anaethestic, but I guess everyone is different. It leaves two tiny scars, one at your belly button, and one just about your public bone.

I did go on holiday very shortly after a laparascopy, but then I was lying by a pool! Don't think I'd have been up for skiing. It does leave some very small scars as williamsbabysmum says (and certainly I still had stitches in for a week or so).

Probably not, I'm afraid. IIt took me longer to get over the ga than the surgery but you might be ok. I've got 5 scars after having it done twice but they aren't that big, they healed very quickly

I've had it for ovarian cysts, and no I definitely wouldn't have been able to go skiing 2 or 3 days later. Mind you, I can't ski at any time - seriously, you've have a general anaesthetic and feel a bit weak afterwards. The scar I have is absolutely teeny tiny, and mostly buried in my belly button - originally red, it's now (about 10 years on) a very fine white line about a centimetre long.

So it sounds like I'd better book it for after my off-piste extravaganza rather than for the day before!
Re the scarring - are we talking scars that are visible or scars that you really have to look hard for? + do they disappear or are we talking scars for life?

And another question (to add to my other questions just below) - if I have the laparascopy in the few days just before ovulation would that interfere with ttc that month?

I had one 9 years ago now and you wouldn't notice the scar in my belly button unless it was pointed out...having said that I'm now 39 weeks pregnant and you sure can see it. My experience was that I was told it was better to have it done before ovulation so they can do a thorough investigation, if there is any chance you may have conceived they won't go near your ovaries, which kind of defies the point.

On a more personal note, giving yourself only 'a few days' after the procedure before ttc, in my opinion, probably won't give you enough time to heal...it may be keyhole surgery but I felt pretty beat up after it.

Regarding skiing, no way!

I can reiterate that it does not leave any major scarring whatsoever, infact I cannot notice any scars at all. The instruments used during a lap are very small (it is keyhole surgery) so any incicions made are very small to begin with. I had three such incisions made and even post operation I could hardly notice any of them.

Would not suggest you go skiing though; you can and do feel a bit icky after this op (the main cause for this is the CO2 gas that they use during the op to get a better view; this gas can travel upwards to your shoulders causing pain).

Presumably your cons will schedule the best time for you to have surgery. It should not affect any ttc for that month.

May I ask why the lap has been suggested to you?

Meerkatsunite - I'm having it to check why I'm having such trouble conceiving + at the same time I am going to have some scar tissue (from a d&c) removed. It is actually the latter op that needs to be done asap as this is probably making it imposs for any fertilised egg to implant but at the same time the cons is going to do the lap. However, as I need to do the scar op asap the cons suggested to call as soon as I get AF to schedule the op for straight after unfortunately that timing will take me to a couple of days before I go skiing. So it looks like I'll have it done as soon as I get back from skiing as ttc is probably a waste of time until this is done anyway but I'm hoping I won't lose that month of trying as this timing means the op will be just before ovulation.

I had one in 1988 and can confirm the scarring is within the navel and hard to see even if pointed out. And certainly you won't be able to go skiing! I walked to work, a distance of about a mile a week after the op, and subsequently got a severe chest infection, bladder infection and was off for two weeks. Have it and take the next two weeks easy!

Can I just reiterate what meerkat said about the shoulder pain - I had forgotten about it, but it was pretty unpleasant . They will explain it all to you before the op, but don't be too concerned if the pain seems quite bad - it does go within a day or so.

Oh yeah! I remember that! They gave me capsules called Mintec to alleviate the wind!

A lap is the standard operation used for determining endometriosis. He will also look for adhesions. Adhesions are commonplace after any sort of abdominal surgery. Adhesions are sticky strands and they can bind organs. Drug treatment will not touch adhesions once they are formed; surgery is needed. The cons. may use a produce called Interceed; this is designed to slow down adhesion formation.

I wish you well with your ops and hope there is a good outcome. Would strongly suggest you ask lots of questions post operation about what was found (you ought to be seen by the cons say a week after you have fully recovered from the lap op) if this info is not totally forthcoming. You should determine when you will be followed up post operation.

I had one along with another more major procedure 6 wks ago and my belly button still makes me cry when I sneeze
but do go for the apres ski, you will certainly be up for socialising

I could barely walk for nearly a week after mine so as you hve a choice as to when you have it done go for after you return from skiing. Make sure you have a good stock of pain relief for when you get home and good luck.
