Trimethoprim ttc scared ! Help

I posted yday about the start of a uti. I’m in Greece and had to see a dr as it was getting worse. They prescribed trimethoprim. My husband and I are ttc, and I may or may not be pregnant just now. I may have not even ovulated - not tracking. But the nhs says not to take if pregnant or trying. I did tell the dr I was trying to get pregnant and he insisted it was safe.
if I keep taking my folic acid will this help? I’m aware this baby is hypothetical at the moment but I’m nervous. I wouldn’t be due to test until like 20th October or something but I’m scared to take the antibiotics but I need too (blood in urine now). And the dr wouldn’t give me anything else!
help 🥲

Can anyone ease my anxious mind?

Trimethoprim in early pregnancy can cause defects. From what I've read online, it says if you can, delay trying to conceive until treatment is completed. Where about are you in your cycle at the moment?

Taking folic acid is recommended anyway in ttc, but unsure if taking a higher dose would 'cancel out' any risk.

If you could work out where you are in your cycle/if you have ovulated based on how long your cycles usually are, you may be able to just stop trying for now until you get treated for this. You can't just not take the antibiotics and hope it goes away, as you don't want the infection to spread to your kidneys, especially if you are abroad.

I’m cd15 at the moment, not sure on ovulation as not testing. Came off pill in aug, had a natural period 4.5 weeks later which best guess if I ovulated would have had me ovulating around cd18.
ugh this is so frustrating!

Annoyingly the Greek dr was adamant it would be totally safe 🥲

Sorry to ask a personal question, but when last did you have sex to try to conceive? If you are cycle day 15 and newly off the pill, there is a chance you may not have ovulated yet. So I would stop trying for now until your next cycle so you can treat your UTI. If you have gotten pregnant, then speak to your GP as soon as you get home and explain. I would also keep taking your folic acid just in case you have already conceived.

We have basically had sex nearly every day or every other day since day 7 - probably what caused the uti ironically.

I’ve read online that perhaps if I am
prehnant, won’t find out for a few weeks, then my gp can prescribe 5mg folic acid which may help…. That’s if I am even pregnant!

Husband thinks I’m crazy for worrying about a “hypothetical” baby 🙈 earliest I would test would be 18-20 oct so I guess I’ll just need to wait and see ( unless AF turns up ) and if I have infect gotten pg then get my GP to prescribe high dose folic acid.

just updating on this.... i have ended up pregnant (around 5 weeks).

I have spoken to my GP who was very reassuring, and said that since I had been taking folic acid pre-conception, and all throughout I really should not worry. She offered me a high dose folic acid but thought it would be a waste because the antibiotic was so early on and will be well out of my system. I upped my folic acid to 800 throughout the course and have remained on this dose, gp was happy with that.

Fingers crossed all goes well :)

That's brilliant! Congratulations 🩷 did you conceive whilst on trimethoprim?

ecossegirl91 · 05/06/2025 22:52

Thank you! Yes I think so or certainly very close… I took the tablets from like 1-5 October last year and got my positive test on oct 16/17th!
