What days to DTD?

Hi everyone

I’m TTC, cycle #2 and unsure which days are best to DTD. I’ve been testing using LH strips and I think I’ll get my peak today. We DTD on Friday and last night as I’ve read that every other day is better than every day, but then ideally I thought it might be better to do today on my peak so not sure what’s to do for the best Grin

What do others do?!

for Now I’d stop tracking and just DTD every 2-3 days. I only tracked after 6 months trying, and got pregnant from DTD on my peak reading day; and the day after.

LuckysDadsHat · 30/09/2024 14:01

Every other day. Stop the tracking and all the pressure etc.... and have sex every other day.

Triangleflower · 30/09/2024 17:26

Thanks for your replies @LuckysDadsHat and @Peonies12 I’m mainly tracking as I’ve been taking some medication for a medical condition which has messed up my cycles so wanted to check whether it’s getting back to normal or not, as well as a guide on whether I do seem to be ovulating.

surprisingly (for me) I’m not actually that stressed this month, I reckon I’ll maybe start to stress/worry after about 6 months, even though I know up to 12 months is normal

But would be good to know if there’s actually any evidence for it being best to DTD on day of peak or if it doesn’t make much difference

I ended up doing it everyday around ovulation time 😅 I'm now 16 wks pregnant but the cycle I conceived I ovulated 10/11 days late so hadn't tested that often as I didn't think it would happen that month and when I did it was a blazing positive so we only did it that night and the following night and I conceived. Fingers crossed for you! I'm a bit of a control freak so I've always felt I had to test, I'd have been more stressed not knowing when ovulation was.

Blue2020 · 30/09/2024 17:42

This pregnancy I dtd on -5 and -2 days before ovulation- so the day before my peak. Saying that we dtd at midnight and then got the peak 9hrs later. I usually ovulate the day after the peak so I guess it might have been closer to 1.5days before ovulation.

My pregnancy before it was -2 days before peak and day after peak. I say this because I had the peak then it was 2 days until my temp rose whereas usually it goes per day- peak, ov, temp rise.

I disagree regarding tracking. As long as it’s not causing you to stress then there’s no harm, if anything it’s giving the best chance each cycle. In my last pregnancy if I had not have tracked my ovulation I wouldn’t have my son now! I ovulated 6 days later than usual (never ovulated late before), and we don’t have the best stamina for DTD. I usually give up once I think I have ovulated. If I went off my cervical mucus I would have stopped -6 days before ovulation, however due to ovulation tests we kept DTD every 2-3 days.

I started tracking due to a miscarriage. I had a very crazy cycle after it with stringy ovulation and 1 day period. So I wanted to know I was ovulating again. Then for this pregnancy I said I would go with the flow after the mini pill and once my period arrived I worked out we had completely missed the fertile window.

Every day and every other day are both fine. Tracking early is fine as long as it’s not causing stress and affecting your mental health. I started tracking from when I came off the pill, because I’d spent over a decade in hormonal contraception and was really interested in what my natural cycle was like, how which phase I was in affected my symptoms and moods. As it was, the cycle I conceived every LH test I did was negative and my temperatures were all over the place, not the nice steady rises I’d had before, and my CM didn’t seem to change too much so I thought I hadn’t ovulated at all!

Lila34830 · 30/09/2024 18:11

I wouldn't say tracking is wrong , feel what's right for you. My OH and I have very busy lives and careers and have sex every other day feels like too much so we find tracking ovulation much better as we know when we should have sex instead of having the pressure of performing 15 days out of 30 ! :) I trust this helps ! (It's only my opinion!)

Really interesting to hear! Yes I feel like I’ve learnt so much about my cycles since I’ve started thinking about TTC and it’s so interesting! Especially interesting about the cycle you conceived! Guess you never really know Smile

Yes this totally makes sense! And me too, as much as I enjoy sex I think it helps knowing roughly when the best time is to be DTD as I don’t have the stamina every day/every other day through the whole month!

I had success when I did it the day before the peak, the two days of the peak and two days after for luck (used Clearblue) so sex 5 days in a row

Lila34830 · 30/09/2024 20:03

I have DTD the day before the peak too and day of the peak ! Not sure it was enough but we shall see! Good luck all x

We tried for 6 months with no luck. Then we took ovulation tests and we had sex whenever we wanted until I was showing high fertility (bear with me), so when it showed high fertility we had no sex until I showed peak fertility so I think we had 3 days of nothing and then had sex on peak fertility day and I’m now 7.5 weeks!

How long did it take you to conceive after coming off the pill. I came off in July after 15 years or so of constant use and seem to be having the same in terms of temp all over the place and not registering peak on LH tests, also can't see too much change in CM. Think I'm still getting used to being off the pill and has been interesting getting to know my body again.

I was lucky that it was very quickly. I only had three cycles after coming off the pill, and my first cycle was very short. I went straight from taking the pill to trying and didn’t use condoms or anything else when coming off to give myself time to settle, which I know a lot of people do.
