Have you had a vaginal delivery, which will have stretched your cervix?
Ive had a coil fitted and it just felt like having a smear, but I was very nervous due to all the horror stories I’d heard.

What type are you having? I've just had my second copper coil and no problems with it at all 🙂

LikeWeUsedToBe · 18/09/2024 11:01

I had the copper coil and it's fine. Just like getting a smear. It did ache a bit to start with and I imagine that's what normal period pain is like? I have endometriosis so compared to that was minor.

Copper coils is definitely my preference for contraception. I hate all the hormones in everything else they mess with my head

Sorry me again

So I'm having the Mirena coil fitted tomorrow. I'm just wondering how long am I likely to bleed for after having this fitted?

@hayley8791 i bled lightly for a couple of days. The fitting was uncomfortable but no periods for five years!!!! Sending hugs and a handhold x

fivechairs · 22/09/2024 21:36

I had it fitted about 6 months ago. I took co-codomol and ibroprofen an hour before, it obviously wasn't comfortable but it wasn't awfully painful. I had it 25 years ago too and remember that was excruciating for days but when I had it 6 months ago it was fine. Had mild period type pain for a couple of days.
I did bleed lightly for about 6 weeks afterwards but have barely had any bleeding since.

hayley8791 · 22/09/2024 21:42

I just don't want to be bleeding at the weekend. I'm seeing my partner and we've had to abstain for the past four weeks.

@fivechairs I i'm unable to Co-Codamol due to taking tramadol twice a day I'm going to delay my dose

My experience has been the same as @shellyleppard You'll be fine.

fivechairs · 22/09/2024 21:47

You'll be told to abstain for 7 days after it's put in anyway OP regardless of bleeding, that's what they told me.

Purplerain1144 · 22/09/2024 22:07

I bled for about 3m after having the mirena fitted. You will be told to abstain from sex for up to 7 days after due to risk of infection

hayley8791 · 22/09/2024 22:13

May take a different option🙈 the past four weeks have been hard enough We only got to see each other every other week due to our work schedules.

Did say I could potentially have the implant or Injection

I had a copper coil and loved it, however I had it fitted without having given birth and I can't lie it was very painful. I had what they called cervical shock and passed out afterwards - but it's important to note I was very underweight and not eating much at the time.

Eat first and take painkillers.

FWIW if I ever want contraception again it will be my only choice. After having all the children I want I plan to have one until after menopause. I bled for a day or so afterwards very lightly.

You really can't have sex though due to the infection risk, but I think that's worth it. The implant I had previously made me feel rage I have never known from the hormones - and that actually did migrate get lost in my body!! Was a nightmare to get out and hurt so much worse than a coil to be removed.

DustyLee123 · 23/09/2024 07:34

I wasn’t told to abstain.
I didn’t bleed after the insertion very much, it had stopped by the time I got home, but I did spot on and off for 6 months. It didn’t stop me having sex though as it was so little an amount.
I had no cramping after. I drove home myself.

vincettenoir · 23/09/2024 07:38

I’ve had more difficult smears. It was absolutely fine. And the bleeding I had before my periods stopped was super light.

I would recommend going to a gum clinic and seeing a practitioner that does them all the time and is very experienced.
