Alcohol and TTC

Hi - I am TTC at the moment and having clomid to help ovulate. I’ve been looking at research with drinking alcohol (or not) when TTC and finding mixed messages. Wondered if anyone had any thoughts or whether their fertility dr had said anything!?

thanks

You can still drink. I did and still fell pregnant, okay

In terms of affecting the foetus, you can have as much as you like as they’re not connected to you at the beginning. In terms of egg quality (and remember changes to diet will take about three months), then I was told by a fertility nutritionist that 4-5 small glasses of wine a week was fine, but try and make it organic.

Only my personal experience and not medically based at all but I never gave up alcohol or changed my lifestyle when I conceived.

First pregnancy, I conceived on holiday where drinks were pretty free flowing and 2 nights before I got my BFP I was at a friend's wedding where there was lots of fizz consumed.

Second pregnancy, I had a summer full of birthdays, engagements, hen do's, weddings and other celebrations where alcohol was consumed and actually got my BFP in the middle of an all inclusive holiday when I suddenly went off alcohol and threw up at breakfast!

Obviously gave up alcohol immediately om getting a BFP but TTC was pretty much the farthest thing from my mind on both occasions.

Not saying this is the right way or recommended by doctors etc, just sharing my experience

I was researching this the other day and the conclusion I came to was to reduce alcohol or stop drinking altogether.

Link this is worth reading. this is a summary:

  • Any form of alcohol consumption may impact your ability to get and stay pregnant
  • When trying to conceive it’s recommended to completely abstain from alcohol
  • Alcohol can disrupt normal hormone functioning and cause subsequent imbalances in reproductive hormone levels
  • Alcohol can also affect male fertility and sperm quality

so it’s not that drinking stops you getting pregnant, but it if you’re having any difficulty it’s probably advised.

There’s a good app called DrinkLess too, you can input your alcohol intake. I didn’t think I drank much but actually it added up tI much more than I thought! Aside from affecting egg quality and fertility, I also realised it’s like an extra days calories and not helping my height. We only drink Fri-sun and I thought moderately but it’s more than I actually realised! So worth monitoring it to see too

This is super helpful. Thank you x

I reduced but didn’t cut entirely. Was having 1-2 drinks a week until positive test. It’s important your partner reduces or cuts out, that’s arguably more important.
