Myself (34F) and my partner (34M) had unprotected sex on 21st aug. The following day (22nd aug) I got my period. It was 5-6 days early and felt different than normal. It was more painful and (sorry if this is TMI) the blood was basically Barbie pink. Never seen it like that. I had a horrible headache that I’ve never experienced before and put it down to the beginning of migraine nightmare (my mum and sister get very specific migraiens and I’ve been waiting for my time). The period was much shorter than normal and lasted only 2.5 days where as normally it’s at least 4. I’m a nurse so I cheekily tried one of the pregnancy strips at work and it came back with 2 lines. I’m now wondering is it possible to have conceived in this way? I hate to admit but I get very confused with the cycle and ovulation periods etc. We’ve been half-arsedly trying but haven’t started with checking the temperatures and marking the ovulating dates in the calendar yet.of course due to my age I really should pull my finger out and get in the loop a bit more. I just wondered if anyone has any knowledge on this? I will of course do another test and will buy the best one I can find after I finish work. But right now I don’t know whats happening. I’m new to this forum so please forgive me if my post doesn’t fit with the general nuance of the page or if I’ve posted this in the wrong place 🫢 thank you in advance for any advice x

No. You won't have conceived and tested positive the next day. It takes time for the sperm to meet the egg, and then once combined they bounce around your uterus for a bit to let your body know it's there. Then it implants. Then you test positive for pregnancy. Normally takes a minimum of ten days from sex to reach this point. It's possible you were already pregnant though and the sexual intercourse irritated your cervix and caused a bleed due to the blood vessels being more delicate when you're pregnant.

As a nurse you should know that you don't get pregnant that quickly! I assume you're pregnant from the month before.

It is impossible for the tests to pick up a pregnancy before implantation and bHCG has built up - which is normally 7-12 days after you ovulated. And it can take a couple of days to build up enough to get a noticeable line rather than a faint smudge. Half of pregnant people only get a positive at 10 days after ovulation. 95% at 14 dpo.

Bear in mind that sperm can live in the body for 7 days. So you don't have to have sex on the day of ovulation to get pregnant

It sounds like you tested today at work? Which would make it 7dpo if you ovulated on 21/8. Only 7% of people who are actually pregnant will test positive so soon. And the results Would normally be very faint. So you probably didn't ovulate that recently, and that episode of sex is irrelevant.

Which means that if you are actually pregnant and got a firm line, it's much, much more likely that you may have gotten pregnant earlier from another episode of sex. Your weird period may have been implantation bleeding or just early pregnancy spotting.

When was your previous nornal period before that? That would be wgen your most recent cycle started.

When did you have sex before 21/8? I think the answer will lie earlier than when you are thinking.
