Hi all,

so since February I’ve been having difficulties with my cycles ( heavy and prolonged) and break through bleeding on my pill after investigation it was found that it was a fibroid which was removed and a D&C due to a thickened wall lining.

after this I didn’t stop bleeding which then caused me to be admitted into hospital and a blood transfusion being needed. Me and my partner after my surgery discussed that I would come off of contraception and if it happened, it happened and we would be happy and fine with that.

Im currently on Northiserone for 3 weeks with a one week break for 3 months as I refused to have the coil.

I'm a little confused if I can get pregnant on northiserone as the nurse said that this can cause birth defects if taken while pregnant which implied I could but nothing throughout this whole ordeal has been clear in the slightest.

just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation or any advise/knowledge that they can offer as it will be really appreciated :)

Hi OP.

Not sure how much help I can be. I had to take norethisterone for prolonged and heavy bleeding due to the mini pill and it definitely does not act as contraception, unsure about the risks of taking it if you were to fall pregnant.

With regards to the coil, I was very very hesitant to have a coil and suffered for years with prolonged bleeding, heavy bleeding and just general misery taking various contraception. I finally took the plunge and had the copper coil fitted in April and I haven't looked back. My body is finally back to a regular cycle, and although my periods are heavier for a day or two than they would have been previously, the fact that I have a regular cycle and no erratic bleeding far outweighs this.

I hope everything gets sorted for you either way! 🙂

If Northiserone is not a contraceptive and you are not using alternative contraception then yes, you can get pregnant
