Eggs not fertilised - IVF

Hi all,
Yesterday, I had my egg collection and they retrieved 11 eggs. The embryologist called today and said that I had 5 x 1pn embryos which hadn’t fertilised. She advised waiting until day 3 to see if they progress any further and develop into blastocysts. Has anyone else experienced this and has had further progress on day 3?

Also, if they do not progress and are discarded, does this count as my first round of treatment or will it be an abandoned cycle?

Many thanks

Low fertilisation rate normally indicates an issue with sperm.

Yes we had similar; Eggs collected and the next morning the embryologist called to tell us how many had fertilised…. It was none. Heartbreaking at the time. I’m sorry Op.

They couldn’t tell us why. They recommended ICSI which we did. It’s a longer story but ultimately our baby is here because of it and I feel grateful every day.

We have had this tested and there was no issue.

Sorry to hear this has happened op - there's still hope with those that are still going though. Basic sperm tests do not pick up on dna fragmentation; the solution for sperm dna fragmentation is ICSI, so worth moving straight to that if you go again, and getting your partner on impryl.

On my last cycle I had 16 good eggs but only 2 fertilised due to sperm quality (even though we had ICSI) . They weren’t developing as they’d hoped so put them back in a day early and I was fortunate that 1 ended up in DS.

Good luck
If it is an abandoned cycle don’t lose heart, they will just need to make adaptations for the next one.

I’m sorry OP, it’s such a rollercoaster.

in my second cycle I had 12 eggs, 6 fertilised (icsi), 3 were good at day 5 and one is my DS.

i was expecting that outcome as I knew some of my follicles were not that big on the collection day which indicated the eggs may not have been mature enough. We didn’t want to ‘miss’ the best eggs which had developed really well.

my DH did have some minor sperm issues which we found out after my first (normal) IVF cycle but that one actually ended up working out too (5 eggs collected in total, all fertilised, 3 to day 5, one DD)

there is lots they can tweak/change if needed.

IVF feels like a numbers game but nature would only choose the one/two best eggs in any cycle. You hear just as many stories of women having one egg, one embryo and one baby. Try not to lose hope!
