Sperm Testing - hard to get appointment

So this entire week we have tried to get my OH a doctors appointment to get his Sperm Analyisis test but they can’t accommodate him as all appointments go so quick & he’s not classed as an emergency. I’m in the UK (North of Ireland).
basically want to ask has anyones partner had them done and can tell me about the Process? Will he need to do anything to prepare before the appointment just incase we get one for next week when we ring tomorrow.
It’s so frustrating and my doctors want his results before putting me through another set of tests so we’re desperate to get this appointment.

(I’m basically ranting because of how frustrated I am) 🙈

My dh was advised not to have sex in day of appointment but that's all. Our doctor arranged ours as we both had tests

You should also be able to book non emergency appointments now, think about 2 week wait but check on government website

Our chemist sells male fertility tests for £10

@FunLurker thank you, we’re at different gp surgeries so we have to book separate appointments. Once he gets his done and gets his results I’ve to take them to my gp and get my tests then wait for further action.
& yes you can book non emergency but the last 4 days we have rang bang on 9am for non emergency appointments which is given for 48 hours later & we’ve been on the phone for over an hour each time and all appointments where gone by then. It’s so hard to get a normal GP appointment.

@Cherry85 unfortunately those can’t be used to be referred to hospital if needs be (that’s what both our Doctor surgeries have told us, we have to have the sperm test done and sent to the surgery)

Can you request a appointment online? I know its a long shot but worth a try. Or your have to call when lines open or even go into book a appointment (not over convenient with work)

worldwidetravel2017 · 10/05/2024 06:20

Superdrug have a 185 gbp sperm test

Nmmck93 · 10/05/2024 07:13

@FunLurker i wish you could book online but unfortunately its phone only once lines open at 9, I started ringing yesterday like a second past 9. It’s crazy just to get an appointment. We have his sister ringing today for us as we both can’t take anymore time out of work to ring this week.

@worldwidetravel2017 I wish we could just use those but unless we pay private or get seen by a doctor you can’t get referred to the hospital for further testing if needs be with tests bought in a pharmacy or online. (That’s what we’ve been told by our doctors)

Hello

We had a similar problem 2 years ago. We got a GP referral and husband phoned and it was 3 months before he could get an appointment. Even worse when he finally went to the appointment and left his sample, he got a phone call a few weeks later saying the results were inconclusive (apparently quite common) and he had to make an appointment to give another sample. Yep, another 3 months wait.

I would advise asking if you are able to drop the sample off yourself without an appointment. We asked this the second time but were told not possible due to it being the second time, but would have been possible first time (but nobody told us).

I can’t remember the instructions he was given for before the sample though sorry.

@Natpat81 he got an appointment for Tuesday they didn’t even ask on the phone what was the appointment for so hopefully he can go in on Tuesday and he can drop his sample off near the end of the week as my O day is due Tuesday or Wednesday so might wait to the week after to drop it off unless they make him do it there and then. it’s so frustrating isn’t it. X

No sex or masterbating I think we were told for a day or two.

DP went home to do it into sample pot, we then had to take it to the hospital lab within a certain time (less than an hour can't remember exact timing) and had to keep it warm (under armpit etc)

Nmmck93 · 14/05/2024 23:55

Just an update;
Partner went for his doctors appointment today and was just asked a series of questions about health etc & a urine sample.
then the doctor told him he would send a pack out in the post (which I found weird that doctors surgeries don’t have these available in the practice) and once he receives the pack he has to do his sample and then drop it to the Labs at the local hospital so very much like @Sunshineclouds11 has said.

@Sunshineclouds11 how long did the process take lovely once you dropped it to hospital? I’m hoping the pack doesn’t take long to send out

I know every CCG works differently, but my husband gets a referral from doctors to ivf lab. He then has to contact the lab to make an appointment, which took around 8 weeks. Results should take 10 days but we've just waited 5 weeks. We initially contacted doctors in November, and got our first set of results in February. We've had the 3rd set of results yesterday, so our experience has been so slow

Sunshineclouds11 · 15/05/2024 08:04

To be totally honest I can't remember exactly but I would say less than a month.
