HyCoSy- help I’m scared!!

Hi everyone

after 15 months of ttc #1 I am going for a private HyCoSy next week. All our other tests are all good. I’m 37 with a slightly higher bmi and Adenomyosis which results in painful and heavy periods. Been doing all the things (tracking, testing, eating well etc) so this is really last port of call before considering ivf.

I am feeling really nervous about how painful it will be. I know it’s different for everyone but any advice/thoughts gratefully received. Especially anyone who has Adeno or poss Endo? I’m going to take paracetamol and Mafenamic acid beforehand to help with the pain.

Thank you for any/all advice ♥️

Hope it all goes smoothly for you - mine was pretty straightforward, I had 20 seconds or so of cramping sensation when they flushed the dye through but it really wasn't that painful (though I don't have endo or adeno). Paracetamol beforehand is a good shout and then take it easy for the rest of the day.

As an extra bonus I also benefited from the alleged three month fertility boost and conceived the following cycle...

pleasemumcanihave · 24/04/2024 13:48

Same - mine is tomorrow first thing! Interested in your responses

Confusedddddddd · 24/04/2024 14:58

Same as @pleasemumcanihave - I have one first thing tommorow. Planning on taking ibuprofen a couple of hours before and paracetamol an hour before.
I don't have endo though I do have hemorragic cysts on one ovary and only one tube (was diagnosed with endo prior to tube removal but they removed a cyst at the same time which biopsy confirmed wasn't endo, and neither were the adhesions the gynae removed!).

Really hoping to have the same bonus as @blackberryhill too.

I had mine about a month and a half ago. I read horror stories online and so was REALLY nervous. It honestly didn't even hurt, just felt like a slight cramp. It was over really quickly too! X

snorlax99 · 24/04/2024 15:23

I had one a few years ago. I had no pain/cramping, no discomfort at all during or after.

HappiestInTheHills · 24/04/2024 16:00

As above mild cramping while the dye is inserted and flushed but overall the process wasn’t as bad as portrayed a lot online. I took paracetamol about an hour and half before I went in. The whole process itself was over pretty quickly and the consultant was very thorough.
I would also recommend taking a sanitary towel for afterwards as there can be a little bit of the dye/lubricant that comes out afterwards.
Hope it all goes well for you!

I had mine in December and like you @MrsBP15 was nervous! However to echo what others of said- it was fine. Similar to a smear and did not hurt! I did also benefit from a fertility boost it gave and fell pregnant the month we had it. Sadly resulted in a MC but it did clearly contribute after two years of nothing happening!

ProfessorplumBilliardroomCandlestick · 24/04/2024 17:39

My HyCoSy was truly excruciating. BUT it did not last long. I did take painkillers before so I don't know what it would have felt like without. Take the painkillers, and good luck!

Ks2023 · 24/04/2024 23:03

The most painful thing was to put this plastic thing to open my vagina the rest wasn’t painful at all. I took 4 paracetamol as well beforehand. No pain after, went back to work straight away

pleasemumcanihave · 25/04/2024 09:44

Had mine this morning and it was fine, not pleasant but definitely doable - some cramping, some discomfort, speculum definitely the worst bit like someone else said. Took 2 paracetamol and 2 ibuprofen beforehand and focused on breathing.

TheBirdintheCave · 25/04/2024 09:53

I had a HyCoSy on Christmas Eve 2019. It was a bit uncomfortable and I had some cramping when the dye went it but it wasn't unbearable. Definitely not as bad as I was imagining. I got pregnant two months later after nothing for 15 months so I feel like the procedure contributed to that.

Good luck!

MademoiselleFrenglish · 25/04/2024 11:05

I've got one coming up too and have spoken to 3 friends who have had them and they said it was fine! The pain is a crampy pain rather than a sharp/needle/cut pain, they said no worse that period cramps. These are girls who give me all the gory details so they didn't say it to make me feel better! I'm planning on taking some pain killers beforehand and buying myself some chocolate once it's done. Good luck, we can do this!!

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 25/04/2024 11:23

I was apprehensive when I had mine as I'd read too many negative stories about it.

I actually enjoyed chatting to the nurse during mine as it was much easier than expected! It was honestly absolutely fine.

It's seven years ago now but I have a vague memory that I took paracetamol and ibuprofen before it to dull and pain.

Confusedddddddd · 25/04/2024 14:02

Just had mine this morning, honestly got worked up over nothing. I took ibuprofen an hour before and paracetamol 30 mins before, the only painful part was putting the speculum in like a smear, and that only because I have scar tissue from the birth of my first. I didn't feel anything from the dye or saline solution.

Thank you all so much for your responses. It’s super reassuring to hear them and so kind of you to take the time. Quick question, did anyone have any blockages and if yes, what happened?

thank you again, I’ve got mine on Thursday so I can let people know how it goes if anyone is curious x

I had one tube not fill as easily with the dye and they said it might be "sluggish"... but it didn't stop me getting pregnant on that same side three months later! (IUI so I know for sure I ovulated that same side).

Confusedddddddd · 30/04/2024 21:51

No blockages, but I have 3 cysts and a heart shaped uterus apparently (uterus shape never came up on other scans I've had before)
