When to test - short cycle

I have a short cycle in general and a short luteal phase (11 or 12 days for luteal).
Tests that say they work up to 5 / 6 days before a missed period don't apply to me, right?
If I tested 5 days before my period was due I'd only be on 6 or 7 dpo.
I'm assuming this x days early statement is for the average cycle only?
