Supplements - Coq10 and DHA

TTC1990 · 02/04/2024 21:15

I’m 34 (almost) and on cycle 5 of TTC no.2. I have a son (18 months) who I conceived almost straight away, but wondering because I’m older, I’m going to need some help with some supplements!

Has anyone got any experiences with taking Coq10? If so, what dosage did you take? Also Vital DHA? I was planning on taking both of these, alongside folic acid. I’ve been taking Pregnacare but just run out, so thought I’d try something new.

Any advice/success stories/things to I should be aware of, are welcome!

TIA!

I’m taking 100mg of Coq10 a day - not sure whether to take more though? Lots of differing advice online!

TTC1990 · 02/04/2024 21:48

@1woodpecker I completely agree! I read on one blog to take 600-900mg!! Wish there was a clear answer! Have you been taking it for long? X

Hi I have heard with CoQ10 you want 200mg. They say Ubiquinol is better than Ubiquinone. Natures best sell both so I’ve ordered the 100mg Ubiquinol (v. Expensive) which is apparently equivalent of taking 200mg but I haven’t tried it yet.

TTC1990 · 03/04/2024 07:19

Hi @Nic834 thank you for that! I was reading similar last night. I didn’t properly do my research both ordering, so I have the ubinquinone. I also read that you need more of this so I was planning on taking 600mg. Not sure whether that’s too much, but also read it can’t do any harm?

I’ve been taking vital DHA and 400 Umbiquinol for about 18m now. It’s important to take it in the morning with food.

Confusedddddddd · 03/04/2024 07:47

Im taking vegan dha - 200mg to start with.

Also accidentally bought ubiquinone instead of ubiquinol. Apparently your body changes it between both forms easily. I also read that your gastric acid will transform ubiquinol into ubiquinone by oxidizing it so it's a waste of money to buy ubiquinol. I'm taking 300mg for now anyways.

This is my first cycle taking it, cycle is usually like clockwork so wanted to make sure it doesn't disrupt it, if it doesn't I'll double my dose next cycle.

TTC1990 · 03/04/2024 08:35

@Confusedddddddd thank you for that! Would be good to hear an update in a month to see how you got on! I’m starting taking it today, however we aren’t trying this cycle (DP doesn’t want a Christmas baby), so hoping it helps for the following x

@Revelatio do you know why you should take it in the morning? I read to take it with dinner.
I've ended up taking both before bed, mostly because the DHA was giving me algae burps that taste horrible when I took it with food.

Morning

I started taking this to try to improve egg quality as I am 39 and sadly had a TFMR last year. We had tried for 18 months before that pregnancy, so I was really worried it wasn't going to happen quickly again for us. We got pregnant again on the 4th cycle of trying, and I'd been taking 600mg of Ubiquinol for 2.5months at that point. Who knows if it helped but I hope so!

Make sure you stop taking it if you get a positive test.

@MrsScotland that is really helpful - thank you! I’m annoyed I didn’t do my research and get the right ones, but hoping the ones I have (below) will do something.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

400 mg is a lot. I’m just starting out would you say 100mg is enough and then ramp it up as time goes on?

This is the one I have been taking!

I was told to take it in the morning as at night can cause insomnia. It needs to be taken with food as it’s fat soluble.

I have been taking this with breakfast and lunch for around 18 months now along with the Vital DHA from Zita West. I haven’t had any issues with it. I did take NAC for a while, but it made my skin very sensitive for some reason.

It’s been a bit annoying as before the birth of my child 3yrs ago I was getting pregnant easily (although it resulted in miscarriages), but for the past 18m we have been trying for number 2 - absolutely nothing!! And I have been doing all the supplements this time round but my period has been like clockwork.

I am meeting with a nutritionist next week to help get an optimum diet and try and consolidate the vitamin tablets to get the nutrients from natural sources where possible.

TTC1990 · 03/04/2024 12:24

Hi @Revelatio thank you for the tips when to take it! I’m sorry it hasn’t happened for you yet. It would be useful to hear what the nutritionist says. It’s such a minefield isn’t it!x

So far so good for me with those 2 supplements. I've just had a much quicker BBT rise and ovulation day has stayed at my usual Day 15.

Hi I see you are taking 600mg of Ubiquinol. I have just orders some 100mg from natures best (it was really expensive and the Amazon price is cheaper for 600mg). The Amazon one is also in flax seed oil rather than sunflower oil which I think is better?

I have also seen these tablets from Ovum; https://startwithovum.com/collections/shop-ovum/products/pre-conception-and-ovulation-support. They have 200mg of CoQ10 in but not in an oil and it doesn’t say whether it’s Ubiquinol or Ubiquinone, but it does have really good amounts of antioxidants and 800 mcg of folate.

Just wondered what you thought of these Ovum tablets as an option?

Hi Nic

Oh it's such a minefield! I have no idea, but I was so pleased to get pregnant quickly so who knows if it helps?

I also took a good prenatal from Her9 that might be worth checking out? It had folate and Vit D, Omega and lots of other things that were all meant to be good for fertility.

I also take 5mg folic acid from the GP due to age and a higher BMI.

It so is there is just too much information out there and not enough official information!

thanksI will have a look at her9!
