May have underactive thyroid

I had my bloods checked as i have never used contraception for over 8 years but have never been pregnant.

Found that i have high prolactin(maybe stress) and may have underactive thyroid (need to redo test to check). However you can only check thyroid every 3 months so may need take longer to investigate this.

I have been reading about infertility and underactive thyroid but is it almost impossibly to conceive with low thyroid levels.. Given that if i need medication it would be a while before i am on medication?

It depends on what your bloods come back as. If you need medication they normal start you on a low dose and do regular blood tests and adjust the medication as needed.

I have an underactive thyroid and granted it was well controlled when i fell pregnant both times but i had no issues getting pregnant and no problems during my pregnancies just had extra blood tests and took medication as normal.

I hope that reassures you a little bit

Hello, thought I’d tell you a bit about my story. Conceived unexpectedly in June (only had sex once that month so was surprised when my period didn’t arrive and even more surprised when I found out I was pregnant!) unfortunately this led to a miscarriage just a week later. We then conceived again after trying in September, unfortunately again I had a miscarriage but this time it was a missed miscarriage found out at a 10 week scan. I was then offered a blood test to determine if there was anything causing the miscarriages. My TSH levels came back as 9.1 which indicates an underactive thyroid. I am now on medication but I’ve no idea how long I have had an underactive thyroid for as so far, it hadn’t affected my ability to conceive. I hope everything works out well for you x

I had no issues conceiving my 2 pregnancies, first try for both but suffered 2 early miscarriages and so went private for some testing. I was found to have a severely underactive thyroid which was a total shock as I didn’t feel I had any symptoms. My TSH level was 98.1 and freeT4 was 3. Both crazily at wrong ends of the scale. I’ve been on 100mg thyroxine since and my levels are now perfect (October 2023-Feb 2024) - my endocrinologist did say I responded particularly quickly, and he said the usual time for results can take approx 6 months to level out.

but just as a bit of confidence, my thyroid never effected my periods/ cycles and ability to fall pregnant. It’s just getting the pregnancy to stick that is my issue!
