Vitamin A

Hi all,

I’ve been trying to do some research on supplements to take when trying to get pregnant/early stages. There are lots of things out there saying don’t take vitamin A but there are also places that say it’s good to take.

Does anyone know whether we should be taking vitamin A or not?

I understand it’s best to avoid vitamin A supplements generally as it’s possible to take too much and has potential to cause issues in pregnancy. You should be able to get enough vitamin A in your diet.

For useful supplements, try looking at the book ‘It Starts with an Egg’

There’s some useful info in there about things like which form of folic acid to take, amongst loads of other supplement info.

Also important to take a good vitamin D – look for one that’s 2000-4000 UI (lots from boots, for eg, are really low dose but they don’t signpost it at all).

Thank you so much that’s a really helpful article. I think I will assume that Vitamin A from food is great but I shouldn’t take extra from a supplement.

Thank you so much. I’ve been taking vitamin D for years and your right the high street ones have a very low potency. I use natures best, but is still is only 1000ius. Should I be taking a higher dose? Thanks

I thinkn it’s best to avoid it I’ve noticed the entire pregnacare pre conception and pregnancy line avoids it

Vitamin D is well tolerated, and I understand it should be fine to take 4000 UI. I’ve heard the minimum you should take (in our part of the world) is 2000 UI, and what you need beyond that depends on your baseline levels – but there’s no harm anyway in taking up to 4000 UI.

There’s a well known academic researcher called Rhonda Patrick who shares a lot of research about vit D (and other supplements), could be worth a look at her website.
