Metformin

Hi all,
Is anyone able to share any stories about being on metformin for PCOS - has it helped you with your TTC journey, has it helped your pcos and how did you get it prescribed?

I was diagnosed with PCOS back in early 2020 but told at the time gyno's either liked it or didn't, and I didn't ask about it at the time.

Have been TTC for over two years, tracking etc for just over a year now with one chemical, but my cycles are everywhere from 30-120 days and wondering if metformin may help my symptoms and regulate my cycle a bit.

Any thoughts welcome 😊

Metformin returned my cycles from being about 3 a year to around 34days, so definitely helped in that respect. It took 6 months to work building up to a dose of 2000mg per day (if you get bad gastro side effects, ask to switch to the slow release version which is much gentler on the digestive system). However for DD1, day 21 blood tests showed i still wasnt ovulating even though my cycles were regular, so we ended up using letrozole for ovulation induction.

For DC2 (currently 36w pregnant), i used metformin again and lost 12kg alongside by following a low carb diet. No letrozole needed and had a natural conception.

I had it prescribed by the endocrinology team and then just got it on repeat prescription from the GP but this was originally around 5-6years ago. It seems pretty common so maybe GPs can prescribe now?

If you've been ttc for over two years though, your GP should be able to just refer you straight to the fertility clinic? They can do full investigations and you might be able to do ovulation induction instead and relying on metformin, which seems to not work for everyone.
