Positive test 4 days after conception?!

I wonder if anyone has any insight for me…

period started on 29th Feb and finished 5th March. Intercourse on 6th March. Yesterday I woke up and had some brownish discharge. I wondered about implantation bleeding so took a test and had a feint positive. This morning I woke up with pinkish discharge and retested and had another feint positive. I then took a clear blue digital and had a positive 1-2 week result.

so it looks like I’m pregnant but it seems incredibly early to test positive! Also I do have concerns about the bleeding…

I am awaiting call from GP but wondered if it’s possible to have a positive so early…

Are your periods regular? When was the last one before this one?

Sleepysaurus2 · 11/03/2024 15:10

This was actually my first period since 2019 (two children, second conceived before period returned) and I am 14 months pp.

Were you testing before you had the period? Could you already have been pregnant and the bleeding was something shifting? So many variables with tests as well! I'm a water fiend so often struggle with urine tests being faint with both hcg and lh.

Did you dtd much before your period? I tested positive a week after what I thought was my period finishing but sadly turned out to have been an early miscarriage instead. I also had spotting a few days after my 'period' finished which is what prompted me to test.

Hopefully this won't be the same for you but definitely push to get checked out at the EPU to check what's going on.

What were your cycles like pre-children - were they very short? It would seem very unlikely to ovulate 6 days into your cycle and get a positive test by CD12 - it would seem more likely that your 'period' wasn't a period and this is a pregnancy from an ovulation in February (either in the early stages or, as someone else has suggested, an early loss with HCG still in your system). Were you tracking ovulation? Was the bleeding like the periods you used to have - appreciate if this is your first one PP the answer may well be no and that wouldn't be unusual anyway...

@hstanford I actually had a GP appointment on the 28th Feb (day before period started) because I had been having some bad lower abdominal pain for over a week. I had a pregnancy test done and it was negative. Following day pain went away and ‘period’ started so I assumed the pain had been my body gearing up for a period.

@Sleepysaurus2 wow that is strange, was it a regular period for you? I'm wondering I it could have been heavy implantation bleeding. My best advice is test again in a few days and check the line progression, or call the epu and see if they'll do blood hcg level checks to see how things are going. Crossing all my fingers for you!

stripe18 · 11/03/2024 21:07

I also tested negative the day before my false period started and then got a positive a week after it finished but was having some spotting by then.

The EPU were good with me though and gave me a scan and regular blood tests which later confirmed a miscarriage in my case.

Hope it's a more positive outcome in your situation though, particularly if you're not really bleeding now.

Update:

I took daily tests for about a week and the line was basically the same every day. Then we went away for a few days so I stopped testing as it was too stressful. I took a test today and it looks like a negative (although I think I can see an extremely light line).

Can I assume this was a chemical?

Sorry to hear your update. With mine, it took over 10 days for me to get a complete negative.

Although I was still showing a very faint positive when my hcg was only 13 on a blood test, so I think some of the pregnancy tests pick up pretty low levels nowadays. Perhaps give it a day or 2 to check there's no faint line left. Has your bleeding stopped?

Sleepysaurus2 · 24/03/2024 07:06

@stripe18 yes the bleeding has stopped now

I would test again in a few days then just to make sure the line is gone.

If you do get pregnant again soon after it'll help reassure you that it's a new pregnancy and not picking up hormones from a previous miscarriage. Sorry you had to go through this as well.
