Coq10 - what are your thoughts

A few people have suggested coq10 to improve egg and sperm quality. Husband and I haven't had any tests yet I have my first fertility clinic appt in a few months so not sure if I should wait or start coq10 ahead of it. I did a quick search on here and seeing mixed views on it, some have suggested that it's not proven to help. Did a quick google search and contradicting info too

What are your thoughts/experiences, ladies?

Having TTC for 18 months, I finally fell pregnant but had a TFMR at 14 weeks due to a chromosome problem not compatible with life. I was worried about getting pregnant again and the quality of my eggs so decided to take ubiquinol alongside a good prenatal and 5mg folic acid from my GP….

Ive just had to stop taking it on month 3 as I’m pregnant again! Honestly don’t think you have anything to lose with it. This is the one I took, I believe 600mg a day is wise

My NHS fertility clinic have recommended it so I take it. I assume that recommendation is evidence based. I take 300mg twice a day and have done for about 4 months. I haven't noticed any effects, positive or negative, but I don't think it can hurt.

We TTC for 2.5 years after initially falling pregnant right away but MC. I started Ubiquinol and Proceive Max 2nd week of June and I got pregnant from August cycle.

CoconutGirI · 05/03/2024 18:59

Had been taking it for about 12 months. Can't say it improved egg quality or sperm at all. We needed icsi and our embryos weren't good quality cc's

Thanks for sharing ladies

@MrsScotland @Olika you've mentioned Ubiquinol , is this another name for coq10?

@CoconutGirI sorry to hear it didnt help, wonder if dosage had anything to do with it?

@circlesand that's reassuring, did they prescribe it or you've bought it yourself?

Hi @JS5

Yes, Ubiquinol is the active 'body-ready' form of CoQ10

circlesand · 06/03/2024 09:56

@JS5 I bought it - I don't think they generally prescribe vitamins/ supplements but I could be wrong.

The problem is that you really need to be taking it for a few months before having IVF so if they were going to prescribe it then it would delay the whole process.

In your situation though, because you haven't had any fertility tests etc. and you're not working towards IVF, I'd take a smaller dose. I would do 200 or 300mg a day if you're going to take it.

Olika · 06/03/2024 10:01

As @MrsScotland mentioned it's the active form of coq-10. It's more expensive but our bodies absorb it better. Here's summary I found online.

I took it for 3 years. Unfortunately it never helped me/ my egg quality and even though during IVF I got some embryos they weren't great and none stuck. I also had 1 natural conception that ended in a MMC. I'm old though (was TTC 39-42). And who knows maybe there was another reason I was never able to conceive not just egg quality.

Has anyone else experienced anxiety or panic when taking ubiquinol?

I have been taking 200mg x 3 a day since early February, on doctor's suggestion, and had a weird anxious episode the following month. I put it down to work / life stresses, but have continued to experience these episodes, and it feels like it has got a lot worse in the last 2 months.

I did some initial reading online, but wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this? Is the dosage too high? I experience anxiety, confusion, feeling like I'm going to faint. I've experienced anxiety before, but like 10 years ago. This is the only new supplement I added, and the timing works out.
