Decaf coffee while TTC

Hi all,

Does anyone have any insight into whether decaf coffee has a negative impact when TTC.

I’ve read conflicting articles about it.

I probably drink between 8-10 (small) cups of instant decaf coffee in a day and now I’m worried it’s having a negative impact. I don’t think I was drinking it when I conceived my first but it’s hard to remember.

Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated x

You can have up to 200mg a day if pregnant and decaf drinks have so little caffeine. So I doubt it would impact anything. There’s apparently up to 15mg in a decaf coffee so you’d have to drink more than 13 cups of decaf to go over 200mg.

There are different types of decaffeinated processes some better then others.

Whilst TTC I have always looked for Swiss Water method decaf that seems to be the best type. Others use chemicals which can me just as bad as drinking full caffeinated.

I use Rave coffee for mine they have a Swiss water decaf.

I hope this helps x

It’s fine. While ttc, through both pregnancies and breastfeeding I drank a caffeinated coffee every day plus one or two cups of tea.

I had decaf coffee and decaf coke during both pregnancies.

I am also agonising over this. It’s very easy to find studies saying that decaf is bad for fertility and early pregnancy, but I do think those were probably mostly women drinking chemical laden decaf. I stopped caffeine altogether (the oft repeated 200mg thing doesn’t completely reflect the study it refers to I don’t think, it’s where they drew a line on a graph basically, not that there is definitely no impact below that, just less of one). I have some lovely swiss water coffee calling out to me from the cupboard, but I think I’m going to stick to just drinking it pre ovulation and in moderation. Obviously it’s all small margins and wellbeing is important too, but after a year and a chemical I don’t want to have another and wonder if some small tweaks could have led to a difference outcome.

Thanks all, I didn’t realise there were different methods of decaffeinating so I will make sure I get some Swiss water method.

I thought I had done well giving up the caffeine! 😅
