When to count as CD 1

Hi ladies I've read that past a certain time of the day you count CD1 as the next day, is this true?

Not sure of the answer to this but I’m interested. I sometimes get my period in the evening or during the night and so I’ve often wondered how I should count it? I also sometimes get spotting but I tend not to count this as it isn’t technically my period.
