Maldives

Also posted this in pregnancy but not sure if better here.

We are going to the Maldives next year and have also decided to TTC early next year. We are aware of the NHS/government categorisation of Zika but from our research, there hasn't been a reported case since 2015.

Has anyone been whilst pregnant? Or know anyone who has? Women are obviously pregnant and having kids there all the time so I think it would be fine but would appreciate any experiences/opinions.

Thanks

Flu and Covid probably poses a greater risk than Zika at this point

I go to Maldives at least once a year - there’s always people posing with their pregnant bellies in the sea! I’d go whilst ttc and have already booked to.

Honestly not something I’d worry about. Make sure you do go to an island with good spraying (the islands are sprayed to avoid mosquitoes etc) and take some good repellant as a precaution.

We had this dilemma in 2019 for our honeymoon. We decided not to go and switched to Mauritius instead (had a lovely time!) But only because i was very risk averse about it, we were already 35+ and knew i had PCOS so our TTC journey wasn't going to be straightforward from the start and we didn't want to wait to start TTC. I can completely see why it wouldn't be a factor for others, so if you are happy with the balance of risk then ultimately you don't have to justify your decision to anyone.

@tutorswife do you know Ozen Reserve Bolifushi? We're about to book with them

Yes, STUNNING. It’s a 5* so is well sprayed. I’m someone who mozzies love, in places you don’t expect them I still get bitten. I think I got one bite here without repellant and DH never has been bitten in the Maldives (lucky bugger). I have never got Zika or any other mozzie spread illness. Actually, I’ve never been ill.

DH has had a fall in a resort and was boated to a normal island for hospital - would put our NHS to shame. Nothing that looks fancy but head stitched, CT performed all on a holiday when no staff were meant to be in all in an hour. He healed well and we returned to the resort, cost £300 (so we didn’t bother with claiming on insurance). So I also really trust their hospital / health system.

@tutorswife I'm SO glad to hear that! We were thinking between there, Ozen Life Maadhoo and Baros. Glad we've gone with there. Also considered Niyama but that looks great for when we have kids.

Have you been to any of these also?

@staycaysandvacays no I’ve not been to the others! I usually go to Cora Cora as it’s small and I prefer that. Six Senses is lovely but the lack of AI option is annoying. The Ritz is nice but I do think the others are better. If I win the lottery, I’d stay at Joali

staycaysandvacays · 29/11/2023 18:11

@tutorswife if I won the lottery I'd stay at Soneva Jani!

@staycaysandvacays i am very disillusioned with the Soneva brand!! Too many influencers and some of the resort, imo, is run down 😂😂

Oh really! I haven't seen it looking run down on anything I've seen
