Alcohol in tww

Hi all,

I've been ttc for over 2 years now. I am currently at the beginning of my two week wait (ovulated 2 days ago) and am going on a long awaited holiday tomorrow for 10 days.

My question is regarding alcohol during the tww. I have not really drank for the last several months but after the year we've had, we're both really looking forward to switching off and would love a few drinks (it's an all-inclusive hotel too!). I know that if pregnant, alcohol shouldn't affect a foetus at this very early stage. However, could it affect the likelihood of implantation, either occurring or sustaining it?

My sil and I were on an all weekend bender a few days before she knew she was pregnant - all is well with said child now! I wasn't bingeing, but I still had a glass or 2 when I was ttc. It really won't make much difference if you're moderate.

Yes it can affect it.

Maternal consumption of alcohol during this time can prevent proper implantation of the blastocyst in the uterus, resulting in an increased rate of resorption or early termination of the pregnancy, generally before a woman realizes she is pregnant.

I went away during the tww, drank, went on hot tubs and just had an amazing time. Came back and discovered I was pregnant.

Go and enjoy your long awaited holiday, you deserve it!

I'm sure others may disagree with me but go and enjoy your holiday! So many of my friends have gone to weddings or on hols etc and not known and everything has been fine...You've had such a tough 2 years, I'd definitely have a few drinks. Obviously not binge drinking but 1 or 2 🤷‍♀️Just listen to your body and if you test and get a BFP then 100% don't drink but at the moment as far as you know you're not pregnant. I'm currently 8dpo and flying out on Monday. (AF due wed) I'm a bit further into tww so I won't drink until AF shows Wednesday or I get a BFP but it's only 2 days so I'll survive.

Can you link to the source of that excerpt?

Can it impact implantation? Yes

I drank in that period when i wasn't expecting to get pregnant but I didn't when I was TTC and I wouldn't in future.

Whataretheodds · 02/09/2023 16:15

However, there are millions of women who drank in that period and later, often in large amounts and their babies are absolutely fine.

If you've not had a month off in 2 years I'd give yourself a break!

EyesEars · 02/09/2023 16:17

Maybe have a month off and party.

There's no concrete evidence-based answer either way, so it's just not recommended at all. Basically we don't know for sure that it doesn't affect implantation, and there is some evidence to suggest it might, so the recommendation is to abstain when tcc.

However, we do know that stress can impact implantation. So just having a couple of drinks on holiday to relax might be a good idea. Especially if the relaxation effect is longer lived than just that one cycle.

So many women drink during the tww and early pregnancy, before they know they're pregnant, with no issue. so as long as you're not getting wasted every day, I would just kick back, relax and drink as much or as little as you're comfortable with.

I'm very much in the 'drink til it's pink' camp and drank during every one of my two week waits. Conceived on cycle 5, no problems with implantation as I'm now 6 weeks. Actually had 2 drinks the day before bfp because I was so convinced I wasn't pregnant 😅 I think I was actually drinking the night I implanted as well (98% sure I felt it).
