If you conceived at 35+

if you conceived at 35+ how long did it take you? Especially if you had other children how long did it take you v when you were under 35?

ive got 2 and would love a 3rd (hence the username) but life as it is, and col can’t really justify trying until next year and then I’ll be 35. I was reading now research shows that the sharp decline in women’s fertility is thought to be more around 37 and on, my friend was telling me whatever association they have in the states has updated their guidelines to reflect this, but still wondered if it would take longer.

my first was about 7/8 months but in a high stress environment, my second first try. I had my amh taken when I was 29 and it was pretty high (if that matters)

Just had my second baby in May, conceived after 3 months of trying at 39 years old, was 40 giving birth. Had my first at 19 years old.

deliwoman1 · 16/08/2023 07:49

Conceiving was the easy bit for me with DD who was conceived on the fifth cycle. I fell pregnant for all but one cycle before that - MC, self-resolving ectopic, MC - and the one cycle where I didn’t catch was due to a burst ovarian cyst. I was 38, DD born when I was 39.

I’m 40 now and ttc no.2. On 2nd cycle and I’m guessing conceiving won’t be so easy. ☹️

LeopardLover · 16/08/2023 08:02

3 months at 34 (very fit and healthy), 2 months and now pregnant at 37 (not particularly fit or healthy thanks to toddler life) 😅.

I will say I took pre-conception vitamins and ubiquinol for about 6 months prior to TTC this time (3 months last time)!

With two kids already, you probably have plenty of time 😊

MummyJ36 · 16/08/2023 08:04

2 months for DC1 (age 30) and 8 months for DC2 (age 35)

Tenpintonpin · 16/08/2023 08:14

Started trying aged 34, took 22nd cycles for DC1. DC2 took about 4 months 2 years later.

Fifthtimelucky · 16/08/2023 08:32

I conceived my first at 35. Took 3 months.

Second took longer. Became pregnant when the first was 18 months. Obviously I wasn't trying to get pregnant again all that time, but I'd say it probably took 6-9 months. I was 38.

I think the main issue was not my age but exhaustion (toddler was usually awake for 2-3 hours in the night). As soon as she started sleeping through, I got pregnant.

HeidiWhole · 16/08/2023 08:36

I had one before 35 and one after. First was first try, second took around a year, although there were two miscarriages in that time.

Poppins2016 · 16/08/2023 10:42

I believe there's a steady decline in fertility after age 35, rather than dropping off a cliff.

Fertility will also vary between different women. In my case, I expect I may still be relatively fertile until my mid forties or beyond (my mother was arpind 50 when she experienced perimenopause, and she had her second/last child at age 41, although she had a couple of miscarriages, potentially age related).

Here's my data. I recognise that I've been incredibly lucky (especially because I have endometriosis and PCOS - I've only ever had regular(ish) cycles and successfully conceived while taking metformin). It's certainly not "average", but I'm including it to show that some people do experience quick conception no matter whether they're 30 or 35.

1st - 30 - first cycle

2nd - 33 - third cycle (but we didn't time one of those cycles correctly).
We also took a short one cycle break between the second and third cycle of actively TTC while Metformin kicked in to regulate my cycles as some of them seemed anovulatory... so some people might consider it 4 cycles TTC.

3rd - 35 - first cycle (chemical/early miscarriage), second cycle (successful so far, I'm 5 weeks + pregnant)

Worrywart70 · 16/08/2023 10:45

Took about 4 months aged 38. Did have two miscarriages before that & then the successful pregnancy started as a twin pregnancy but one of their hearts stopped.

Not sure if that is relevant to age. The consultant said he wasn't sure why.

Yesabsolutely · 16/08/2023 10:45

I conceived my third aged 36 at first attempt! I was very lucky. Didn’t have ovulation kits etc just DTD 14 days into my cycle. Good luck 🤞

You do understand that is not what the average woman would be able to achieve right?

Some people are at one end of the spectrum, some are in the middle and some are at the other end... it doesn't make their experience (or the facts!) any less valid. It's important to get a good cross section of data. It would be odd if everyone posted to say it took them years, when that's not true for all women.
(Having said that, I recognise that a MN thread isn't necessarily the best source of accurate data, but I believe my basic points are still valid)!

Goldbar · 16/08/2023 11:02

It took 2 months to conceive DC1 (under 35) and over 2 years to conceive DC2 (over 35).

allgoodthings84 · 16/08/2023 11:10

Conceived my first when I was 29 unplanned pill fail (my own fault) but we was going to start trying in a few months anyway as my ex was ready but I wasn’t quite ready but was I very happy.

when ttc #2 I conceived on cycle 5 at 37 but was a very early miscarriage/CP at just before 6 weeks. I then conceived again cycle 6 at just turned 38 but was another miscarriage/CP at just before 6 weeks. I then conceived again cycle 7 and am now 38+4 weeks pregnant.

The GP and fertility person I spoke to don’t think my losses were necessarily age related but I’ll never know

MollyRover · 16/08/2023 11:54

3 months @ 30(unfortunately mc), 2 months @ 31, 1 month @ 36. I remarked to the midwife that it was amazing that I conceived so quickly after coming off birth control, she asked me what I thought would happen when trying for a baby so I think it's more common than not. A friend of mine who's also a midwife told me that if you've previously been pregnant then your body "knows" what to do.

So I’m very much like you minus the endo but I have pcos (as a result high amh) and metformin helps tremendously to regulate my cycle- feel as sick as dog though.

dm had all her children post 35 and wasn’t perimenopausal until chemo (after 50)

best of luck with your pregnancy 🥰

No gynae conditions, regular cycle.
Had fertility MOT including semen analysis for my partner (he's a year older than me) before TTC and all good. Realise others will have had different experiences possibly due to underlying issues they weren't aware of.

1st (aged 41) 2nd cycle, MC 1st trimester
2nd (" ") 1st cycle, MC 1st trimester.
3rd aged 42, 2nd cycle, now 16 weeks (progesterone since +ve test prescribed by GP)

warmmfeet · 16/08/2023 20:37

It look me a year to get pregnant under 35 but only two months after.

Olika · 16/08/2023 22:37

I was 37 when we got pregnant right away but mc. We tried for 2.5 years before got lucky again. I read somewhere it can take longer if you already have been pregnant before. I swapped the supplements I was taking so not sure if that helped.

It can take longer if you’ve had a baby before? I’d have thought the opposite

Gosh, so many women conceiving quickly!

I was 33 when conceived DD1 and she took 9 months.

I'm now pregnant with dc2 after over 5 years of trying including 6 failed rounds of ivf, 3 surgeries and 4 first trimester losses. No 'breaks' to mentally recover, just shit loads of money gone and a mental battering. You just can't know how it will go for you.

seven201 · 16/08/2023 23:10

Forgot to mention I'm 40, nearly 41

Clefable · 16/08/2023 23:18

I was 32 with DD1 and it took 6 months. First cycle with DD2 at just turned 36.

dizzydizzydizzy · 16/08/2023 23:20

DC1 - took just over a year, DC2 about 2 months

DelphiniumBlue · 16/08/2023 23:26

33, 35 and 40 - conceived straightaway each time.

Notellinganyone · 16/08/2023 23:28

I had my first at 29, accidentally! Second was conceived at 33 and took a couple of months. Third at 36 - took about 8 months and I was getting a bit worried.
