Hi everyone,

Has anyone been given Fentanyl before surgery before? I went for a hysteroscopy today and prior to my general anaesthetic, I was given Fentanyl to help me relax but I actually fell unconscious. The anaesthetist was still talking to me telling me how the Fentanyl will relax me a little before we go in the surgery room - and I was completely out. I don't remember anything that happened after. I was supposed to be unconscious for about 30 minutes with the general anaesthetic but I was out for over two hours.
Has this happened to anyone? Is that a usual reaction? I haven't had a chance to speak to my doctor yet.

Why didn't you ask to speak to the people at the hospital?

When they forced me to wake up over two hours later, I was still in a confused state like I was stoned. I was feeling so sleepy and couldn't really think straight. Just wanted my husband with me, went home and had a 3 hour nap. Still felt so dizzy and tired. But I was able to really realise what had happened later that night.

This is standard sedation. I had it recently for a colonoscopy.

Oh really? Do they sedate before doing the general anaesthetic?
