Hi, I am new here and wondered if anyone can offer some advice.

My husband and I have been TTC for a year with no success. We are both early thirties. My husband recently went for a sperm test at our local hospital and the doctor has called today asking him to arrange an appointment to discuss the results.

We are naturally assuming the worst and wondered if this was normal practice. Would the doctor also call him in to discuss the results if they were normal? He can't get an appointment until Friday so we are currently sick with worry.

Hope someone can help!

Thanks!

Hiya,
We going for testing & the letter says that the testing is done at the clinic & then the results are sent to your GP afterwards. It's then down to the GP to discuss results and further options as they have the resources available. So yes, this is normal, and I guess reassuring, because if you've a good relationship with your GP it can help with the results and next steps. Please try not to worry (easier said than done I know) - we have to wait till April for our appt. And Good Luck - I hope you get good news...

hi,
the advice I would offer, is to call the hospital and ask for someone to talk to as you are worried, there is no point second guessing as you will only worry more. From my experience with fertility issues there is usually someone that you can talk to, ask if they have a fertilty nurse/counsellor that you could talk to, they hopefully can answer questions on what to expect from your visit and offer some support.
Hope this is of some help,
best wishes

Would agree with whatme's response.

I would also suggest you both go along to this appointment on Friday if at all possible. You must remember though that one semen analysis alone is not fully conclusive of there being male factor problems anyway and such tests often need repetition. You should be tested further as well to find the underlying difficulties regardign the subfertility.

You ought to be referred to a specialist subfertility unit as well.

Good luck for Friday!.

Hi Treak - I think it is quite normal to go in and discuss the results in person. From personal experience it is much better this way rather than over the phone, as over the phone they just give you the results rather than giving you a consultation and being able to answer your questions, which they can during an appointment.

We got my husband's first test results briefly over the phone and some elements weren't great. However when we went in a week later for a proper consultation we were much more reassured and I really regret getting the initial results over the phone as spent days in a panic and fearing the worst !!

Try not to worry, I know this is easier said than done (I've been there!!) I hope it all goes ok tomorrow.
