I am considering getting some - probably the tincture.

Anyone got any experience of this? Should I only take it for the first half of my cycle, and should I contact my doctor before taking it?

Please do not self medicate with this as it can make some hormonal imbalances worse (particularly if PCOS is an issue).

If you do want to use AC I would seek out a properly qualified medical herbalist in your area and seek advice from such a person.

dizzydixies · 26/02/2008 17:48

agree, check first beanie

beaniesteve · 26/02/2008 18:50

ok

I thought it was supposed to be a good thing. Does noone have anything good to say about it?

it is a good thing but it has to be suitable/appropriate for you
you wouldn't just start taking prescription meds without advice so I would just recommend you do the same with these

beaniesteve · 26/02/2008 20:43

ok

I have an appointment booked to have blood taken on 21st day of my cycle so I'll ask the doc about it then

well I have some good things to say about it!!

I agree with the others that you should probably get professional advice but I was naughty and didn't!

I have mild PCOS and have two clomid daughters. I wanted to try and get my cycle back to normal before trying for #3 next year so started taking Agnus Castus 27 days ago and AF arrived today so thats a 27 day cycle, I have never had anything close to that naturally before!!

No idea if or when I ovulated as didn't check but I am feeling very pleased with the results so far!

Good luck

beaniesteve · 26/02/2008 21:58

the problem is I read you really aren't supposed to try for a baby and take it at the same time, so I doubt I will take it as I am 37 and really don't want to be waiting around for another six months without trying

I'm going to start charting.

I am taking this at the moment. I had ivf in the summer and all the drugs really mucked up my cycle I was having 35-38 day cycles the last two have been 31 day and I have ovulated as I have been scanned angd had blood tests.I have just been taking it up to ovulation 2 tablets twice a day along with evening primrose oil. As atilla said best to get it checked out herbalist would be more up on it rather than Gp I would have thought. Good Luck.

beaniesteve · 27/02/2008 10:21

What does evening primrose oil do - can it regulate your periods?

OP posts:
RFCMummy · 27/02/2008 11:32

I didn't realise you were only meant to take it up to ovulation? I have taken it all through the cycle?

WorzselMummage · 27/02/2008 13:08

I took EPO and AC after 20 months TTC and got my BFP the first month, i could
feel a difference immediatly and am convinced that it was the epo and AC which had changed something ( i had a progesterone/ LP problem ). Sadly i had a MMC at 13 weeks so am back to ttc again, i'm going to give my body a couple of months to see if the mc has sorted me out if not i'll be back to self medicating

Its good stuff, of 3 people i know who have taken it, 2 of us had BFPs the first cycle.

I took 2 epo and a ac in the morning with my normal folic acid and then 2 ac again at tea time. I stopped it when i got a peak on my moniter.

Good luck

beaniesteve · 27/02/2008 14:10

I thought that if you were takinf AC you shouldn't be trying for a baby. I read that you should take it for a few months but use contraceptive (Condoms) while taking it?...

OP posts:
WorzselMummage · 27/02/2008 14:16

i did a lot of reasearch before i took it and i never read that anywhere. I know its not a good idea to take it while your pregnant which is why i stopped an ov but i didnt come accross anything like it being dangerous while TTC.

beaniesteve · 27/02/2008 14:23

I've read in several places that Agnus castus should be discontinued once a woman becomes pregnant. This is why I wondered how safe it was to just take it and continue TTC. I also read somewhere that you shouldn't be trying to conceive while taking it but now I can't find the source...

OP posts:
beaniesteve · 27/02/2008 14:24

Oh and ... If you are TTC then there is a chance you could become pregnant while still taking it... surely that's a risk?

OP posts:
WorzselMummage · 27/02/2008 14:29

Thats why the advice if your TTC is to stop when you ovulate. I didnt come accross anything which suggested that it was unsafe to take while TTC and i had long enough to research it, it was about a year after i heard about it that i decided to take it and as i said it worked for me.

cedar12 · 28/02/2008 09:48

If you stop taking it when you ovulate you wouldnt risk taking it when pg. It has certainly helped my cycles.

PotPourri · 28/02/2008 09:54

I got some but in teh end didn't use it. But I am sure it says on teh box that you shoudl not take if pregnant - a bit of a no brainer since you woudl be taking it to get pregnant!! Anyway, why not take it and stop when you ovulate. Might be all that is needed, if not, start again at next AF

BUT, as others have said, you should really see a herbalist if you are being safest....

beaniesteve · 28/02/2008 10:27

Is it easy to find a herbalist? What kind of tests do they do or do they just ask questions?

I just get the impression that yu can walk into a herbalists and they will give you anything.
