Hi all

Husband and I are currently trying to conceive. I’m 28 and he’s 29, both fit and healthy. I came off the pill in February, had my withdrawal bleed in March and my first real period in April, all within normal cycle times. I then completely skipped May’s period, there was 8 weeks between April’s period and June’s, all pregnancy tests were negative. I just put that down to a fluke but this month, I’m 10 days late on July’s period. I took a test on Friday which was negative.

I’m worried now there may be something wrong - I was 17 when I last had normal periods so I have no idea what my cycle is meant to be, but surely a cycle over 40 days is not normal? Or is this just an effect of coming off the pill?

Should I take another test this weekend?

Any real-life experience or knowledge would be really handy!

Thank you!

Have you been testing to find out when your ovulation is?

AFireAtASeaParks · 26/07/2023 11:28

I had some ovulation sticks and the app Flo, I tested throughout my predicted ‘fertile window’ but they all came back as not ovulating, then I ran out.

It can take a while for your normal cycles to return after being on the pill. I had about 10 months of odd long cycles then a miscarriage. After that straight back to regular 28 day cycles? Even while breastfeeding. Give it a few months and try tracking ovulation just to check you are....and if not see the gp.

Hi, I came off the pill a couple of years ago (after 16 years taking it!) and found that my cycles were irregular to begin with. I didn’t start ovulation testing until some months later, so I can’t comment on that part but since taking good supplements my cycle is back to normal now. I’d invest in supplements if you can - I started with Proceive which worked well. Good luck!

Hi there @Barbs3116

I’m currently taking vitamins C and D and Folic Acid - is there anything else I should be taking?

Hi @Sunnydays12340987 and @WonderingWanda
Do you think it’s worth taking ovulation tests every day throughout my cycle?

@AFireAtASeaParks I tracked by basel body temp. Every morning before I got up? Some of my cycles were 70 odd days so opk sticks might have got a but expensive. The temp rise is obvious and then your temp stabilises for the last bit of your cycle. I think I took agnus castus and a general multivitamin on top of folic acid which seemed to help make them more regular.

WonderingWanda · 26/07/2023 11:43

Sorry? Not sure how I made that all bold!

Hi @Sunnydays12340987 and @WonderingWanda
Do you think it’s worth taking ovulation tests every day throughout my cycle?

It might be worth it for one cycle just to see if you've missed it but it can add to stress

KinderCat · 26/07/2023 11:55

@AFireAtASeaParks I was on the pill a similar time frame to you (on at 16, came off late 20s), and it take quite few months for my cycle to become normal. Had months of light spotting and months of ridiculously heavy periods. After a while we did invest in the ovulation sticks, just for a couple of months to keep an eye on it and get a feel for what my cycle would be. If it hasn't been been that long maybe give it a little longer then approach GP?

Barbs3116 · 26/07/2023 12:50

@AFireAtASeaParks it sounds like you’re taking the main ones. I would add CoQ10 and Omega 3. I’ve found a combined supplement easier so I know I’m taking the right combination/amounts but that’s personal preference.

Chrissy1208 · 27/07/2023 13:16

@AFireAtASeaParks i was on contraception from 16-28 and it took my body 3 years to get back to normal. I downloaded the natural cycles app where you check your temp every morning and log periods etc. this helped me so much as it gave me a timeframe that i would ovulate so for that week I would do a LFT to pinpoint the exact day. Hopefully your body readjusts quick and your cycles become more regular x

It took me a year to get back to regular periods after the pill!

Barbs3116 · 01/08/2023 18:49

Hi, it looks positive to me!

AFireAtASeaParks · 14/08/2023 09:03
